Job Description

The Genomic Analyst position is a full-time position and is a staff member of the Advanced Diagnostics team. The Genomic Analyst will work with pathologists/hematopathologists and medical laboratory technologists/assistants within the Division of Advanced Diagnostics and wider Laboratory Medicine Department to provide comprehensive somatic genetic testing and reporting for solid tumours and hematological malignancies. This position will combine understanding and expertise in genetics/genomics, bioinformatics and biomedical research. The Genomic Analyst will serve as a subject matter expert in genetics and genetic variant interpretation as well as providing technical expertise in bioinformatics pipeline management, optimization and troubleshooting in addition to various other related duties as required.

Accountabilities:

  • Manage the regular review, interpretation, and analysis of genetic variant data from next-generation sequencing (NGS) and qPCR testing
  • Draft reports in partnership with medical staff (pathologists/hematopathologists) to provide data for the generation of clinical reports
  • Serve as the primary resource of subject matter expertise and technical content for managers, directors, and lab medicine clinicians
  • Analyze NGS data, create, manage, and optimize bioinformatic pipelines and troubleshoot errors
  • Collaborate and coordinate with support personnel from ThermoFisher/sequencing technology vendor for technical troubleshooting and problem resolution
  • Manage relevant computing resources such as data storage in partnership with the Osler information technology system team(s)
  • Participate in the development, analysis, evaluation, and implementation of new genetic assays and/or technologies
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to software used to detect and interpret clinical significance of sequence and copy number variants (e.g. Ion Reporter, Alamut)
  • Completion of validation documentation and operating procedures for new tests prior to implementation
  • Ongoingly participate in continuing education initiatives as well as supporting quality assurance or research projects
  • Preparation and editing of figures, presentation slides, posters and/or manuscript writing for external audiences
  • Assist in writing protocols, standard operating procedures, and reports/report templates for the use of NGS and related technologies in clinical testing
  • Participate in the preparation of policies, processes and procedure within the quality system to ensure effective operation/compliance with IQMH laboratory accreditation requirements
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in medical genomics
  • Experience working with next-generation sequencing data: sequencing quality control, sequence alignment, variant calling and annotation, RNA-sequencing analysis, germline and somatic mutational events, copy number variants etc.
  • Proven experience developing NGS bioinformatics pipelines
  • Experience with relevant public databases
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Experience writing and editing scientific materials for external audiences
  • Timely completion of tasks by adjusting priorities as required
  • Proven excellence working in a team environment with strong interpersonal,
  • Communication and conflict resolution skills

Additional Information

Hours: Currently days/evenings/nights including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
