Job Description

Verisk's Summer Internship Program is July 3rd  - September 29th . Verisk is looking for Interns to support our large team of actuaries and data analytics experts, who create innovative analytic products based on our unique database of over 21 billion records spanning more than twenty lines of insurance.

You will support Pricing Data Analytics Team members in creating a wide variety of ISO’s analytic solutions including actuarial products (for example loss costs and rating factors; analysis of trends impacting premiums and claims); analytical data management, including smart data quality analytics, data aggregations provided to US state insurance regulators and analytic research & development.

A successful candidate will possess technical and mathematical skills, to manipulate data and derive analyses. Most important, though, is a sense of inquisitiveness about data, and the ability not just to find patterns in data, but to also understand what they mean.

What will you do?

  • Review the quality of data provided by insurance companies, both in transactional detail and in aggregate, and help companies to correct errors.
  • Understand and support our business processes, and recommend improvements in data management, error identification, quality control, process automation, or analytic techniques.
  • Create, modify and execute computer programs to extract, transform and summarize data, as input to derive analyses and reports.
  • Support strategic initiatives associated to cloud computing, by helping to migrate code, data and processes, and reconciling results against existing procedures.
  • Support to create clear and easy-to-understand reports. Present your analyses, ideas, progress and results to internal manager and colleagues. Support a high-performance collaborative culture. Participate in peer-review with colleagues on an ongoing basis to learn, teach, and ultimately, produce high quality results.

What will you learn?

  • The useful technics and tricks how to manipulate and work with a large dataset (>1,000,000 rows).
  • How to use your technical skills in practice: how to share the work, create clear codes, how to cooperate with other business partners and manage deadlines.
  • Foundations of Business Intelligence & advanced data analytics tools and project management techniques around them (we provide necessary materials and dedicated support for you).
  • The structure of insurance datasets & basic actuarial concepts.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in 3rd year of Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree with a major in Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Risk Management or related discipline
  • Some experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis, using at least one of the tools such as SQL (it is a strong asset), Python, R or SAS.
  • Technical background should include a working knowledge of MS Office applications (especially intermediate knowledge of Excel) and an understanding of computer programming concepts.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Not required but nice to have:

  • Data visualization software such as Power BI, Tableau, others.
  • Using VBA to automate tasks in Microsoft Office.
