Who We Are

Verily is a subsidiary of Alphabet that is using a data-driven approach to change the way people manage their health and the way healthcare is delivered. Launched from Google X in 2015, Our purpose is to bring the promise of precision health to everyone, every day. We are focused on generating and activating data from a variety of sources, including clinical, social, behavioral and the real world, to arrive at the best solutions for a person based on a comprehensive view of the evidence. Our unique expertise and capabilities in technology, data science and healthcare enable the entire healthcare ecosystem to drive better health outcomes.

Description

Verily’s internship is a paid 13 week program for rising seniors, either undergraduate or graduate students, who are interested in working at the intersection of technology, data science and healthcare. The program is designed for Computer Science and Data Science students, and again this year we encourage students who have been historically underrepresented in this field to explore the program, which is a pathway towards full-time employment within Verily. This includes but is not limited to: women, Black/African-American, Latine/Hispanic, Native American, people with disabilities, veterans, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The Registries & Real World Data team supports building the longitudinal data platform that enables the scalable generation of curated, longitudinal, patient-level data registries for evidence generation use cases across the drug- and device-development lifecycle. This is achieved by combining both the actively collected data through CRFs (Case report form) and ePROs, as well as the Real World Data (electronic health records, medical claims etc.) which can provide valuable insights for us to understand the healthcare data in the real-world settings.

As a Data Scientist, you will be part of the team at the core of our mission to drive innovation in evidence generation. Along with the fellow team members you will develop new types of longitudinal datasets that combine clinical study data with real-world data from sources such as EHRs, claims, sensors, and molecular assays. To support this work, you will help to define approaches to characterize data quality and to address data quality mismatch across sources. You will also design and conduct analyses using our datasets and develop guidance for other users.

**Join us for a unique 13 week internship that will take place May 15th to August 11th 2023 OR June 19th to September 15th 2023.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with cross-functional partners to design and create longitudinal datasets that can answer specific clinical research questions, and implement processes to measure and enhance the data’s completeness and quality.
  • Leverage Machine Learning and/or Natural Language Processing tools to identify and improve data quality issues.
  • Become an expert in our data’s capabilities and limitations.
  • Help to develop standardized processes, procedures, and documentation for data analyses and apply them across our internal and external work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as a full-time student in a PhD or Master's program in a quantitative discipline (e.g., biomedical engineering, computer science, statistics, computational biology, applied mathematics, or similar) with an anticipated graduation date on or before the end of 2024.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Direct experience working with real-world data, such as EHR or claims data.
  • Experience with machine learning (supervised and unsupervised methods) and Natural Language Processing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in clinical research and/or outcomes research with a deep understanding of differences between real-world data and clinical study data.
  • Experience working with life sciences companies and clinical subject matter experts
  • Direct work experience and/or relevant coursework in health informatics including familiarity with medical terminologies and ontologies.
  • Prior track record of success working cross-functionally on teams and building strong relationships with internal peers.
  • Creative and methodical problem solving: understand needs, identify options, form hypotheses, make decisions, and learn faster through feedback.

The US base pay range for this intern position is $50.48-$61.06. Our pay ranges are determined by role, education level, experience, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay ranges for the position across all US locations.
