Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Principal Data Engineer to join our Data Platform team. The team is responsible for building a Cloud data platform that enables teams to create products at scale and power our application modernization plans. You will be part of the team working on company’s architectural modernization effort, building a data platform for analytical processing, as well as transaction processing.  We are seeking skilled technologists who have strong technical skills as well as the leadership characteristics required to guide others from a technical perspective.  

You should be passionate about technology, software engineering, data and analytics, quality, and innovatively addressing business problems. You will work with the team to collaborate on software solutions and ensure exceptional software engineering practices, quality, and good documentation. It's essential to be willing to take on new skills to meet the shifting demands of accelerating our modernization efforts to the public cloud, stream-based processing and Kubernetes world. Feedback from the users should be something that you look forward to, as you will work closely with the platform's end users to incorporate their needs into the team’s roadmap and use it as a measure of success. A critical success factor is being viewed as a trusted partner and collaborator, including business and technology stakeholders.

 What You’ll Do 

  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Engineers and analysts on critical initiatives to build and distribute revenue producing data products 
  • Architect, design, build and implement and support data pipelines and products to support ML and analytical use cases 
  • Lead the architecture, implementation, and operations of platforms and tools for securing, processing, and querying data at scale. 
  • Provide the leadership and research of new technologies within the team 
  • Collaborate with and across Agile teams to design, develop, test and implement data and analytics solutions 
  • Design, build, and scale infrastructure in Cloud (e.g., AWS) and analytics applications using big data and machine learning technologies 
  • Participate in setting the standards for cloud-based initiatives 
  • Architect and develop end to end scalable data applications and data pipelines 
  • Lead the design and build of our next-gen data lake  
  • Help drive optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality 

What You Bring to the Table 

  • 12+ years of progressive software development experience with high proficiency in two of the following: Python, Java or Scala 
  • Experience in cloud computing (e.g., applications, infrastructure, storage, data and platforms) 
  • Advanced technical expertise and knowledge of  
  • Designing and building complex, highly scalable, reliable data pipelines, using the Big Data ecosystem (Hadoop, Hive, Spark, Kafka or equivalents) 
  • Cloud native application and cloud services architecture 
  • API and microservices architecture 
  • Streaming and event processing architectures and platforms (e.g., Kafka) 
  • Structured and unstructured databases and usage patterns 
  • High-speed, high-volume, high-frequency transaction processing systems 
  • Real-time logging, monitoring and resiliency approaches 
  • Process automation approaches and tooling (e.g., DevOps and AIOps) 
  • UNIX/Linux OS and scripting skills.  
  • Infrastructure as code technologies, such as Terraform, Helm Charts and CloudFormation 
  • Databases, both SQL and NoSQL (Mongo, Cassandra, Yugabyte, etc) 
  • Knowledge in Docker, Kubernetes is a plus 
  • Craftsman-like approach to building software; takes pride in engineering excellence and instils these values within the team and others 
  • A proponent of strong collaborative software engineering techniques and methods: agile development, continuous integration, code review or pairing, unit testing, refactoring and related approaches
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; demonstrated ability to employ fact-based decision-making to resolve complex problems, by applying logic analysis, experience and business knowledge 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective, trusting partnerships with product managers, architects and technical leads for individual products and applications
  • E-trading and financial services industry experience is a plus
  • Strong presentation skills; written and verbal communication including the ability to influence. BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related subject

For job positions in NYC, NY, and other locations where required, the estimated salary range for a new hire into this position is $180,000 USD to $260,000 USD. Actual salary may vary depending on job-related factors, which may include knowledge, skills, experience, and location. You may also be eligible for annual cash incentives, equity and other benefit programs.
