Software Engineer II - Azure Compute – Analytics and Insights

Metrics like uptime/availability/reliability and service performance take on a new meaning at the scale we operate. Our customers want 5 9’s+ of availability, transparent maintenance & updates to their systems, resiliency of their workloads despite H/W and system failures that happen all the time in the datacenter, ability to deploy & dynamically scale large number of VMs/containers reliably.
Ensuring the QoS at scale requires us to architect and build systems across all layers and we work on architectural improvements across the entire Azure Core stack to achieve the SLAs, along with turning our incredibly rich and big data into strategic assets that will drive business and engineering goals and efforts.
As a member of our team, you will be helping build tools and analytics purposed at improving the availability and reliability of Azure Compute resources as well as other top level KPIs of the Azure Compute business. We’re looking for full stack developers with an emphasis on Data Engineering and Machine Learning. The ideal candidate should have a passion around turning data into meaningful analytics that impact the business. As a member of our team, you would be helping to analyze causes of interruptions/degradations to Azure VM/Container workloads and deliver metrics as well as insights to executive leadership to inform overall Azure strategy and directly to customers to improve their satisfaction of Azure and to the product developers for improving the platform. Responsibilities
- Help design and build experiences and analytics on top of the data engineering work focused on driving measurable value to the Azure Compute business such as issue detection, root causing, fast attribution, input for mitigations, etc., reusing code as applicable.
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
- Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
- Contributes to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provides estimation.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
- Share accountability of a wide array of assets and be comfortable with learning a broad array of technologies. Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
- Look for opportunities to share learnings and tools broadly within Microsoft and beyond. Specifically, our team does cutting-edge work with Azure Data Explorer (Kusto) and makes a point at contributing back to the larger environment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of experience in designing, developing, deploying, and operating reliable systems preferably with experience in distributed systems fundamentals, along with problem solving and debugging, engaging in site-reliability engineering practices, and data driven approach to solving problems iteratively and measuring success.
- 1+ years of experience in working with Azure Data Explorer or SQL, and map reduce based data processing platforms.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional / Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in building Machine Learning models.
- Basic knowledge on networking (concepts such as TOR, LB, VNet, VLan, etc.).
- Experience with Azure subscriptions and resource management (ARM APIs).
- Experience with serverless architectures, other cloud architectural patterns, web development.
