Position Summary:

Digital and precision agriculture promises to provide full-chain solutions to agricultural research and production management, including the development and deployment of novel sensing technologies, robotics, and AI-based data analytics. Two primary challenges facing the specialty crop industries in New York State are integrated weed management and postharvest managements. This position is jointly directed by Drs. Yu Jiang, Lynn Sosnoskie, and Chang Chen who work collaboratively to develop digital agriculture tools for weed management and postharvest processing for specialty crops (e.g., grapes, apples, and vegetables) in New York State.

This position is responsible for assisting in data acquisition, robot maintenance, and routine data analysis using existing algorithms for research and extension programs led by Drs. Yu Jiang, Lynn Sosnoskie, and Chang Chen. Specific responsibilities include: 1) work with other lab members for instrument maintenance, 2) conduct data acquisition from greenhouse, laboratory, and field experiments and demonstrations related to weed management and postharvest quality assessment using existing instrument in the three labs, and 3) perform basic data analysis using algorithms developed by the labs.

This is a one-year term appointment with possible extension dependent on successful performance and continued funding.  This position is full-time 39 hours per week for 12 months.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and training background in food science and engineering and/or chemical engineering is required.
  • Experience collecting, entering, and evaluating data sets (quantitative, qualitative, geospatial, environmental, etc.)
  • Demonstrated work and/or research experiences of using Python and other tools for statistical analysis (e.g., ANOVA) and image analysis. Ability and interest in learning additional programming languages (e.g., R)
  • Demonstrated knowledge base and work/research experiences of using hyperspectral imaging and/or other optical/spectral sensing techniques for specialty crops.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and wellbeing.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working experiences of using Weka and/or its APIs for machine learning applications in specialty crops.
