About the Role  

The Principal Reference Data Analyst will own specific roadmap activities as allocated within the Enterprise Data Governance (EDG) team and will report to the Director of Data Governance & Product Data. You will be responsible for identifying and analysing reference data requirements across Elsevier, defining & delivering a pragmatic Reference Data Management (RDM) Approach and Framework, and the subsequent application of Reference Data maintenance capabilities across Elsevier. You will work closely with EDG team members, taking on responsibility for the end-to-end RDM capability. You will represent EDG to stakeholders across the company and be the knowledge representative for RDM.  Your success will be measured by the level of adoption of an effective and workable RDM implementation. 

Responsibilities  

  • Build Reference Data Management Approach and Framework: Define and document a pragmatic, yet workable RDM approach and Framework. You will engage with multiple direct and indirect stakeholders across Elsevier to identify high level requirements and capabilities to inform the approach and framework. Within this Framework consideration must be given to Gen AI topics such as taxonomies, ML models, embedding vectors, etc 

  • Gather current and future RDM requirements: Engage with direct and indirect stakeholders to gather both current (existing) and future requirements for both RDM capability and the data itself. Analyse existing business processes and their alignment with current systems or requirements. Conduct business process and business needs/requirements analysis on existing systems; identifying options for potential solutions and assessing for both technical and business suitability. Map reference data assets across the Elsevier landscape, including their criticality to the organisation and identification of data asset owners. Translate these requirements into clear and actionable user stories or specifications, prioritised according to organisation criticality, that will guide the development of a practical and implementable RDM capability. 

  • Research RDM applications/ systems: Identify RDM applications/ systems/ capabilities both externally (vendors) and internally (bespoke Elsevier development) to create a System and Functional Requirements Matrix. Assess vendors/ Elsevier capabilities and provide a structured process to identify the best practice, fit-for-purpose options. Lead the review process to identify the best fit for Elsevier and provide a clear Business Case to RDM Stakeholders. 

  • Reference Data Maintenance & Upkeep: Initiate improvements, quality analysis, enhancements, de-duplication, working processes, hands-on RDM clean-ups, education & training to support & guide all RDM Contributors & Curators. Maintain & review the prioritisation for critical datasets on an ongoing basis.  You will be the leading Reference Data Steward performing stewardship and curation of enterprise level reference data. You will hold data owners accountable for the reference data under their control across the Elsevier landscape. Drive & advocate input of RDM content (definitions, glossary, lineage, etc) into the Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC). 

Requirements  

  • A passion for Data & Analytics & Reference Data Management with fundamental knowledge of Data Quality, Data Governance, and Data Architecture. 

  • Able to both actively listen to and effectively question stakeholders on their requirements to provide appropriate business context for Reference Data Management.  

  • Able to collaborate with groups of people from diverse backgrounds, skill levels and located across the global business. 

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, including the ability to work effectively at other people’s level of confidence.  

  • Accepts personal accountability for outcomes pertaining to their assignments and projects, whether success or failure.
