About Investments

The Senior Data and Business Intelligence Engineer role supports our Investments function. RenaissanceRe’s Investments team manages our $29 billion investment portfolio, allocating our assets, either directly or through investment managers, to deliver alpha against our strategic benchmark. We invest in a diverse range of assets from treasuries and corporate bonds to equities and private credit in order to provide capital and liquidity for underwriting risk and paying claims. Our investment portfolio is one of RenaissanceRe’s “Three Drivers of Profit”, along with underwriting income and fees, providing $1.2 billion in net investment income in 2023 to benefit our shareholders and joint venture partners.

About the Position

Reporting directly to the VP, Systems Strategy & Architecture, for Investments IT, the Data & BI Engineer will work on key initiatives, leveraging cutting edge cloud and integration technologies to drive data-driven decision making. The team comprises engineers from various disciplines including software engineering, data and BI engineering, process automation, and quality assurance, among others. As a Data and BI Engineer, you will be helping the team to move away from legacy analytical solutions to modern, cloud native data platform solutions such as Dremio to unlock newer analytical capabilities and insights to the business, supporting our growth in size and complexity as well as establishing a foundation from which we can continue to scale.

The Data and BI Engineer role is based in the Dublin office, collocated with the majority of the IT and Investments teams.  Occasional travel may be required, including Bermuda, London, and New York.

Key Relationships

  • Reports to:  VP, Systems Strategy & Architecture, Investments
  • Key Stakeholders & Partners:  IT Developers, Engineers, and Portfolio Managers; Investment Operations; Core Investments team, including Managing Directors, CIO, and Head of Quantitative Investments

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Data and Business Intelligence solutions, automated tests, documentation, and related processes to meet and exceed the requirements of Investments stakeholders and other functional partners
  • Engage in the technical design efforts for Data and BI subcomponents to achieve and implement fit-for-purpose solutions
  • Work closely with business teams and leads to define and execute different project phases to meet timing and quality expectations
  • Meet or exceed the quality, reliability, resilience, scalability, and stability goals of their assigned work
  • Dive into learning RenaissanceRe’s current state, developing proficient knowledge of internal systems to provide operational support and make thoughtful change recommendations
  • Communicate and engage with the processes adopted by the squad, bringing a continuous improvement lens
  • Embrace the RenaissanceRe culture of collaboration, focus, respect, integrity, precision, and passion and demonstrate it in daily activities

Candidate Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of relevant experience and proven track record working with technical teams using a similar technology stack, including:
    • Hands-on ETL/ELT work experience in an Agile environment
    • Experience building PySpark-based data pipelines
    • Working knowledge of at least one cloud platform such as Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure preferred
    • Experience with a Change Management tool or platform such as JIRA, ServiceNow, or similar
    • Familiarity with software such as Dremio, PowerBI, Tableau, Postgres, AWS Glue/ Databricks helpful
  • Experience and understanding of IT challenges, opportunities, and applications in a Financial Services context, specifically in Investments or Asset Management, strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated learning agility and facility adopting new technologies and systems
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to estimate and clearly articulate development effort time required for specific tasks in sprint ceremonies
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent industry experience
