About the Position

Reporting directly to the Data IT Lead, and working within the Capital, Rollup and Modelling portfolio, the Data Engineer will design and build data products for RenaissanceRe users.  The role is based in the Dublin office. 

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated data engineer with experience in designing and developing data and analytics solutions in a cloud environment.  The successful candidate will work on a team building next generation data solutions on AWS for our Risk & Underwriting business unit.  This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with an energetic   and enthusiastic approach who wishes to work in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Our technological platform is constantly evolving as we apply new and emerging technologies to our expanding business.  The Capital, Rollup and Modelling data engineering team manages data and analytics solutions at the head of RenaissanceRe’s risk portfolios management strategy and supports a global user base. Key Relationships
•    Reports to: Data IT Lead
•    Stakeholders: Product Owner; Business Analyst; Portfolio Manager

Key Responsibilities
•    Design and develop data and analytics solutions, automated tests, documentation, and related processes to meet the requirements of the business, providing partnership and solutions that exceeds expectations.
•    Support our applications and tools through their lifecycle of requirements, development, testing, deployment, documentation, operation, user training, maintenance, and enhancement.
•    Ensure stability, integrity, accuracy, timeliness, and usability of existing data resources.
•    Understand and contribute to our strategic architecture initiatives, and act as a day-to-day champion to progress these forward within the portfolio.
•    Produce code following established engineering standards.
•    Meet or exceed the quality, reliability, resilience, scalability, and stability goals.
•    Collaborate with all stakeholders (Business Analysts, Product owners & managers, and architects)  in establishing, refining, and documenting database and other functional requirements.
•    Use specialist data engineering knowledge  to inform the team’s technical decisions.
•    Contribute to the review, selection, and adoption of proprietary and third-party solutions.
•    Ensure compliance with relevant company standards and guidelines.
•    Contribute to the technological and methodological direction of software within the development team and the company.
•    Embrace the RenaissanceRe culture and consistently demonstrate it in daily activities.


Candidate Qualifications
•    5+ years of experience working in Data and Analytics, with domain expertise architecting, designing, and developing end-to-end data solutions.
•    Working experience in AWS Platform (or other cloud service like Microsoft Azure)
•    Proficiency in SQL (essential) and Python
•    Experience working with AWS Lambda and Step Functions
•    A passion for learning new concepts and technologies
•    A proven track record of delivery using a range of data technologies.
•    A proven ability for design with a detailed understanding of industry standards and norms across data, including but not limited to ETL, data & dimensional modelling. Experience of large-scale solution design and architecture.
•    A detailed knowledge of Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment practices with practical knowledge of DevOps principles.
•    Demonstrable analytic and problem-solving skills. 
•    Flexibility to work independently or as part of a team
•    Helpful but not required: 
•    Working knowledge of Dremio.
•    Working knowledge of Docker.
•    Working knowledge of data lakehouse architecture with S3, Glue and Spark.
•    Understanding of Data Mesh concepts.
•    Working knowledge of infrastructure as code tooling such as CDK or Serverless. 
•    A degree level education in a relevant discipline or equivalent industry experience.
