Postdoc in the Characterization of 2D Magnetic Materials - DTU Physics
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
DTU - Technical University of Denmark
Are you excited about magnetic materials? Would you like to explore their fundamental physical properties using scattering techniques?
The research section Magnetic Materials and Neutron Scattering (MAGNET) at the Department of Physics, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Physics) is seeking a highly motivated candidate for a postdoc position within experimental condensed matter physics, working on characterization and understanding of novel magnetic materials using neutron and x-ray scattering in combination with laboratory-based techniques.
The experimental demonstration of ferromagnetic order in a 2D sheet of CrI3 and Fe3GeTe2 has spurred enormous interest in 2D magnetism. There are now large and growing materials databases containing 2D magnetic materials including topological magnetic materials, some of which have not yet been synthesized. This postdoc project aims to identify and characterize materials from these categories that can be synthesized using CVT and CVD methods at the Technical University of Denmark or by collaborators. Specific compounds to be targeted include magnetically frustrated materials, and materials displaying magnetoelectricity.
You will work with Senior Scientists N. B. Christensen and R. Toft-Petersen in the MAGNET section of DTU Physics. You will collaborate closely with the group of Assoc. Prof. T. Olsen from the research section CAMD specializing in density functional theory and prediction of novel low-dimensional materials, and with the group of Assoc. Prof. T. Booth from the research section 2DPHYS focusing on the synthesis of nanoscale materials and device fabrication. The position is funded through the Q-MAT European Spallation Source Lighthouse initiative.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen our research in 2D magnetic materials. You will play a key role in tying together expertise within synthesis and characterization techniques, in particular using x-ray and neutrons, and theoretical modelling.
The ideal candidate should have a background in experimental condensed matter physics with a track-record in x-ray or neutron scattering and/or relevant synthesis techniques. Experience in programming, for example in Python or Matlab, is an advantage. We expect a high level of motivation for conducting research at an internationally competitive level together with a ‘can do’ attitude. Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English are a requirement. We also expect you to assist in co-supervision of BSc and MSc students.
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
