Postdoc in Machine Learning/Deep Learning and Eye Tracking – DTU Compute
Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark
DTU - Technical University of Denmark
Can you help realize the potential of machine learning methods in eye tracking and pupillometry?
DTU Compute is hiring a second full-time Postdoc for the project “Reading the Reader”. The project overall aims at improving the reading ability of people with impaired vision and their educational opportunities by advancing state-of-the-art machine learning/deep learning techniques to characterize reading patterns and model reading on the individual level.
As our new colleague in the “Reading the Reader” team you will be part of the Section for Cognitive Systems, which is a lively and research-oriented group of scientists and support staff with a broad interest in information processing in humans and computers, and a particular focus on the signals they exchange, and the opportunities these signals offer for modelling and engineering of cognitive systems.
The university itself is in the greater Copenhagen area, which is acknowledged for its excellent standards of living, childcare and welfare system.
The project is carried out in collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy – Architecture, Design, Conservation, and will include computer- and data-scientists, designers, psychologists, experts in reading patterns, as well as ophthalmologists. It is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, collaborative projects within data science.
Experimental work, data analysis, modeling and publication of academic papers
Your role will be in developing and validating machine learning models. You will participate in creating an experimental software framework for reading, capable of presenting text while collecting eye tracking data, doing feature extraction, inference and suggesting interventions in near real-time. You will do so by planning and performing experimental work and data collection on human subjects (normal vision as well as vision impaired). Your tasks might also include:
- Data analysis, including feature extraction and engineering
- Developing novel, and adapting existing, machine learning techniques
- Uncovering and modeling latent structures in eye tracking data
- Classifying and modelling reading patterns and estimating the reliability of the models
- Lead and contribute to publication of academic papers in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
You will work as part of a cross-functional team and be able to additionally teach and (co)supervise e.g. related BSc and MSc student projects.
A PhD degree within machine learning or computer science and experience with pupillometry.
We are looking for a profile who is driven by pushing boundaries, generating and carrying out new ideas, building on previous scientific work yet still covering new ground.
To succeed in this position you must have a strong mathematical foundation as well as strong analytical and academic skills. It is also important that you enjoy working with complex topics and have the ability and drive to work cross-disciplinarily in an international academic research setting.
You must have compelling communication skills in English, with a track record of scientific publications, conference presentations, reports and/or popular dissemination. Additionally, your CV comprises a good research track record in one or more of the following fields:
- Machine Learning / Deep Learning
- Computer Science
- Eye Tracking
- Pupillometry
- Reading
- Signal Processing / Biometric Signals
- Human-Computer Interaction
As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in e.g. machine learning, eye tracking, computer science, data science or related fields.
