The Role
As a Principal Optical Scientist, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary, You will be a part of the Laser and Optics Sensors team within UK Intelligence sector and, through your experience of the design and implementation of optical communications systems will be actively involved in developing communication systems for use in QinetiQ products, research projects and development of bespoke solutions for novel applications across the breadth of the QinetiQ’s business.

 

Day-to-day, you will:
•    Contribute to leading a team of Scientists/Engineers
•    Assist in delivery of product, development and research programmes 
•    Develop existing optical communication sensing technologies and conceive of new ones to solve customer problems
•    Identify and develop business opportunities including writing the technical content of bids
•    Lead customer demonstrations, presentations, and troubleshooting activities some of which will be overseas
•    Develop programmes of work (plan effort and materials requirements) and work with project managers to convert to costed project plans
 
This role is a full-time position based at our Malvern site with some flexibility for home working available.
 
Essential experience of the Principal Optical Scientist:
•    Practical experience of Research and Development of Communication systems including designing and building telecoms component-based fibre optics systems and bulk-optics systems
•    Handling and assembling fibre optical sub-systems and systems
•    Software implementation for control, acquisition, processing and visualisation tasks (preferred languages Python, Matlab, LabVIEW, C, C++)

 

Qualifications for the Principal Optical Scientist:
•    Relevant experience through a Degree and/or industry experience within a relevant role.
