Amazon EMR Studio team is building a fully managed self service data science and analytics platform, that makes it easy for data scientists and engineers to develop, visualize, and debug data intensive applications.

Amazon EMR is a web service which enables customers to run massive clusters with distributed big data frameworks like Apache Hadoop, Hive, Tez, Flink, Spark, Trino, Presto, HBase and more, with the ability to effortlessly scale up and down as needed.

We are looking for a Sr. Software Development Engineer who excels at working in an agile environment, and is excited about our mission to democratize data intensive processing. You will work in a diverse team to build and evolve the next-generation of data, analytics and ML services. As a Sr Software Development Engineer, you will design, implement, test, operate, and evolve the backend and frontend components for this new product. Your work will enable customers to build and run end-to-end data preparation and exploration services.

This is a hands-on position where you will be do everything from designing and building extremely stable components and cutting-edge features for the savviest customers in the business to help them get the best results.

Key job responsibilities
  • Work closely with senior and principal engineers to translate complex functional and technical requirements into detailed software architecture.
  • Develop highly scalable backend services that powers our fast-growing data science and analytics platform.
  • Collaborate with product managers, UX designers to develop friendly and intuitive front end experiences.
  • Work on Amazon EMR runtime distributions including but not limited to open source softwares like JupyterLab, Jupyter Enterprise Gateway, Livy, etc and big data frameworks like Apache Spark, Presto, Hive, Trino, etc.
  • Deliver features with top-notch quality, on time.
  • Be responsible for overall system scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Mentor junior engineers, define our technical culture, and help build a fast-growing team.

Basic Qualifications


  • 4+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language
  • 2+ years of experience contributing to the system design or architecture (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead OR leading an engineering team

Preferred Qualifications

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design.
  • Background in building developer tools/experiences.
  • Experience with JupyterLab, Jupyter Enterprise Gateway, Zeppelin Notebooks
  • Experience designing and building highly-scaled distributed systems and web services
  • Thorough understanding of parallel algorithms, concurrency, multi-threading and asynchronous architectures
  • Experience working in an agile software development organization
  • Experience building with SOA using Java on Linux
  • Knowledge of and contribution to Hadoop ecosystem
  • Experience with one or more of Ruby, Python, Java, Go
  • Proven ability to effectively drive cross-team solutions that may have complex dependencies
  • Masters/PhD in Computer Science with emphasis on distributed systems and Big Data architectures is a plus.
The base pay range for this position is $184K - 250K/yr. Pay is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on payment and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
