Legal and Group Secretariat is responsible for delivering an integrated and consistent approach to the Group’s external and internal legal risk management affairs and corporate governance.

Your team

You will report into a Senior Legal Counsel, Data Governance and support a range of business units across CBA on privacy and data matters. Your team will be the Retail Banking Legal team.

Your impact & contribution

The purpose of this role is to deliver high value strategic legal services to a range of business units across the Group in relation to privacy and data matters.

Your responsibilities

  • Be responsible for a range of active privacy and data matters, including preparation of advice and correspondence with regulators such as OAIC and ACCC, assisting with preparation of Bank submissions and undertaking research.

  • Monitor regulatory developments and case law in Australia and overseas with respect to privacy and / or data laws.

  • Provide input into any privacy or data implications in 3rd party arrangements.

  • Adhere to the Group’s policy and frameworks to optimise the management of risk and compliance and facilitate reporting requirements.

  • Identify, analyse and provide insight into legal issues, including drafting key documents, presenting clear recommendations and ensuring legal compliance.

  • Liaise, collaborate with and influence senior leaders and stakeholders.

  • Contribute to team culture through excelling in customer service, simplifying processes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

Your reporting lines

This role reports to the Senior Legal Counsel – Data Governance.  Your manager once removed is the Managing Counsel, Retail Banking Legal. 

Your skills & experience

  • Deep knowledge of the privacy and data laws and their application in a highly regulated industry, preferably financial services (at least 4 years PAE preferably both in a top tier law firm and in-house) 

  • Strong understanding of data and privacy legislation, including:

    • Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (knowledge of Part IIIA desirable but not required)

    • Consumer Data Right, particularly in Open Banking

  • Knowledge of overseas privacy and data protection laws, such as EU GDPR, desirable but not required

  • Desire to learn about new and emerging technologies and digital engagement, such as AI and Digital Identity

  • An ability to provide accurate, timely and customer-focused advice through effective and succinct communication to stakeholders

The Retail Banking legal team is a close-knit and supportive team. We are looking for a colleague who is positive and collaborative in their approach.

Skills and experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in law

  • Australian admission to practice
