Job summary
Amazon’s Worldwide Operations Consumer & Corporate (WWOC&C) Employee Relations (ER) team is looking for a Data Science Manager (DSM) with a demonstrated passion for building innovative new analytics, models, tools and processes for our Employees and Leaders. Are you looking for an opportunity to build in a completely new space that will stretch you and force you to demonstrate your mastery of data science, data analytics, problem solving and enterprise wide deployments? This DSM will lead a new team that is pioneering ideas from concept to reality and in this role—new bold ideas are always welcome. This DSM will obsess over the Amazon employee experience and the employee voice across the organization. This DSM will directly apply their knowledge of Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing engines and Business acumen to dig deep and help Amazon leaders gain insights into areas of opportunity in the employee experience across Amazon. Finding, prioritizing and resolving employee experience defects will be the mission every day. The Data Science Manager will play a critical role in advancing our mission. You will join a tight-knit team of ER professionals, including HR, operational, program, product, tech and legal leaders. You will be supporting Amazon's Worldwide Operations Consumer & Corporate (WWOC&C) portfolio, and have direct impact on the daily work of over 1.5M+ Amazonians.

Our projects span multiple organizations and require coordination of experimentation, economic and causal analysis, forecasting, dashboarding and predictive machine learning tools. We’re looking for an enthusiastic technical expert and storyteller to explore the world of Amazon data to generate insights—connecting employee experiences to decision makers in a compelling way backed by data. Your focus will cover all aspects of how we learn more about our employees, uncover problems that need to be solved, and validating the impact of our solutions. You will work with other thinkers, creators, and communicators to build the skills of the entire team to create a research-driven organization. You will invent, refine solutions from start to finish—data sets, queries, models, reports, dashboards, analyses—to answer business questions while ensuring we are meeting the needs of the business and team goals. You will draw on your knowledge of data science best practices, big data management fundamentals, and analysis principles to build solutions that enable effective, data-driven business decisions. You will learn the business context and technologies behind your team’s data infrastructure and work with customers (e.g., researchers, economists, data engineers, business intelligence engineers, product managers) and other internal partners to ensure deliverables are aligned with expectations.

Key job responsibilities
• Define Science Vision: Partner with stakeholders to define and maintain a product vision and roadmap and drive the evaluation, selection, implementation, and evolution of technology solutions as needed
• Own and Drive the Scientific Roadmap: by creating the Science strategy for our portfolio of internal applications, managing customer requests, and maintaining a prioritization model you will provide leadership with clear business justification and communications about our continually evolving Science roadmap.
• Own the Development and Deployment of Tech platforms: We leverage AWS for our data infrastructure and its many tools to help with Data Science and ML product development. All AWS products are open for experimentation. This DSM role will lead the ER Science team through the development of best practice standards in all Science/model development.
• Build the Strongest Science/Tech Team: Show how tech management should be done while leading a team of Developers through sprint and scrum based SDLC standard processes.
• Own Model Design & Output Development: Work with product owners to develop models and outputs that drive insights to business stakeholders. You will see your teams work through complex company-wide projects through the full lifecycle of design, development and execution, ensuring their timely and effective delivery.
• Focus on Quality: Ensure data quality throughout all stages of acquisition and processing, including such areas as data sourcing/collection, ground truth generation, normalization, transformation, cross-lingual alignment/mapping, etc
• Teach How to Leverage ML and Data Science: Lead how you and your team will Earn Trust with each model that is built by ensuring end use customers can understand and leverage their outputs to deliver results and met business objectives.
• Build Analytics and Measurements: Possess exceptional analytical skills, comfortable working with large amounts of data and communicating data findings. Analyze key metrics to uncover trends and root causes that inform model design. Measure outcomes and outputs of projects and process improvement endeavors. Leverage quantitative results to inform direction of the business.
• Obsess Over the Voice of the Employee and Managers: Develop a keen understanding of the voice of our Employees and managers. Combine data and anecdotes to develop perspective. Ensure employee perspective is at the forefront of model development and deployment.
• Deliver Innovative Solutions: Challenge current practices and think outside the box to generate creative ways to scale ER Sciences and develop innovative solutions raise the bar and exceed the customer expectations.
• Drive Communication: Own communications to stakeholders that enable a clear and simple understanding of you and your teams work.
• Lead Cross-Functional Collaboration: You will partner with teams including technology, business and services organizations to bring solutions to life for Associates and teams. You will build collaborative, influential internal and external relationships with Operations and PXT leaders and other critical stakeholders to gather information, feedback and earn support and necessary resources to design and deliver your models.
• Master of Problem Solving: Troubleshoot issues independently and drive them to closure with minimal supervision; persevere in the face of internal and external barriers

The Employee Relations team has one of the most broad and expansive remits in Amazon and is responsible for the identification of defects in our employee experience across all roles in the WWOC&C organization and beyond. Finding these defects is not enough though; we are tasked with building and deploying Programs, tools and solutions to remove these defects. Our products and programs are always changing and we continually innovate to transform and improve the employee experience. Our ER Organization is highly empowered to do the right thing for our employees and is often called on to provide insight to the highest levels of leadership at Amazon.

Basic Qualifications


• Bachelor’s Degree required or equivalent combination of education and experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, or equivalent.
• 5+ years of experience working in a data science capacity, ideally in the tech or consumer industry.
• 3+ years of experience hiring and leading experienced scientists as well as a successful record of developing junior members to a successful career track.
• Demonstrated proficiency in building or directing science work with high positive impact on business outcomes.
• Demonstrated proficiency leading roadmap strategy and definition
• Demonstrated proficiency leading feature delivery while balancing competing stakeholders
• Demonstrated proficiency with SQL and at least one scripting language (e.g., R, Python – preferred)

Preferred Qualifications

• A PhD in a quantitative field (Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, AI, Statistics, or equivalent)
• 5+ years of experience working in data science with a focus on people metrics or HR data
• 5+ years of experience managing data scientists or similar roles.
• Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, Sagemaker, EC2, Data Pipeline, & EMR
• Global experience (product launches in multiple geographies simultaneously).
• Agile or Scrum experience/certification and CI/CD development frameworks
• Direct working experience with Agile development methodology
• Experience communicating with all levels of an org entry level through C-suite.
• Knowledge of data analytics with tools such as Tableau or Quicksight.
• Ability to understand, troubleshoot, and describe complex processes and issues to non-technical and technical colleagues.
• High attention to detail including precise and effective customer communications and proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
• Proven track record of taking ownership and successfully delivering results in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.


The base pay range for this position in Colorado is $140,100 - $189,500 a year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. A sign-on bonus and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
