Lead Data Scientist – Gas & power Trading

Main Purpose:

We are recruiting an experienced data scientist to develop and manage market intelligence, decision support, and optimisation analytics in our Gas and Power Trading businesses. The candidate will work closely with our traders, research analysts and technologists to develop and manage a number of analytical tools to improve decision making on the trading desks. These tools will include applications of computational statistics, machine learning, operations research and classical AI optimisation methods. The objective is to increase the profitability and efficiency of our trading businesses.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities, Key Responsibilities:

The following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are necessary for this role:

• Experience working as a data scientist, quant, research analyst, or trader in the commodities industry.

• A Master or PhD in Applied Mathematics/Statistics, Computer Science, Operations Research, Mathematical Finance or related field.

• Excellent Python and SQL skills.

• Practical experience developing and deploying machine learning and statistical models in a business setting.

• Ability to work productively with commercial stakeholders.

The following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are desirable for this role:

• Experience developing and deploying optimisation applications in a business setting (e.g. linear programming, vehicle routing)

• Data engineering skills such as ETL pipeline development.

• AWS experience and certifications.

• Experience with Tableau, Streamlit, or Django.

Key Responsibilities          

Development and maintenance of models and analytical applications for trading desks.

• Ability to communicate technical issues effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders across business lines and technology.

• Ability to creatively apply data and analytics technology to solve commercial problems.

Key Relationships and Department Overview:

Department

The Data Science and Engineering team researches, develops and provides advanced analytics and data services to the trading business at Trafigura. It is comprised of Data Scientists, Data Analysts and Data Engineers. It is a commercially driven, front office aligned team, that works in close partnership with the trading desks, global research and our enterprise technology teams.

Key Relationships               

• Report to Chief Data Scientist (Geneva).

• Work closely with the global Gas and Power trading business heads.

• Work closely with global heads of research.

• Work closely with other data scientists, data engineers and platform engineers in the Data Science and Engineering Team.
