Job summary
Amazon is a fast-paced, dynamic, innovative technology company based in Seattle and with offices all over the world. Amazon Tax Technology is a global organization where people, technology and innovation come together to deliver state-of-the-art solutions that enable our customers to scale, drive efficiency, mitigate risk, and solve business problems introduced by Amazon’s complex environment. The Tax Data Management Solutions ("TDMS") team is seeking an exceptionally capable and motivated individual to support compliance with E-invoicing regulations around the world.

TDMS delivers solutions that support the automation of our Indirect Tax group’s processes. Amazon is a HUGE company that records volumes of sales transactions each day that far exceed what other companies’ systems record over an entire year. This requires innovative, thoughtful and nimble thinking to implement solutions that help our Indirect Tax group deliver the reports, filings and payments required by every jurisdiction that Amazon serves. This role will support this effort and join our team at our new HQ2 complex in Arlington, Virginia.

This role will join TDMS's team that serves our AWS Tax customers by delivering automated reporting and reconciliation solutions in support of new business launches, new legislation or internal initiatives.

The right individual should demonstrate exceptional data skills to wrangle AWS's highly complex data ecosystem, solid business judgment to ensure the delivery of the right results, and the ability to operate successfully in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment. The position requires the capacity to work independently within a distributed team environment, build effective working relationships inside and outside of the group, and execute critical process improvement and technology projects.

This role performs a wide variety of responsibilities:
  • Drive program management and timely delivery of multiple projects
  • Work with other tax and technology teams across regions to identify, create and implement globally scalable processes and solutions
  • Partner with Indirect Tax Compliance and Audit customers to define, prioritize and execute the project road map to address AWS Tax customers' needs
  • Perform hands-on detailed data research and analysis of large financial data sets, including investigating, troubleshooting and resolving data quality issues to ensure compliance deliverables are complete and accurate
  • Build and maintain relationships with our key technology providers and other technical teams across Amazon
  • Plan ahead to grow the team to serve Amazon's indirect tax technology needs.

We are a fast growing team, so we're looking for candidates who are eager and able to learn new content quickly, who are willing to explore unfamiliar territory, and who possess ironclad judgment and integrity around confidential information.

Basic Qualifications

  • BS degree in Accounting, Business, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, or a related field or equivalent experience
  • 8+ years’ working experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Master’s plus 5 years’ work experience) in tax, accounting, data analysis or related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrate critical thinking to devise innovative ways to accomplish tasks, never being satisfied with the status quo
  • Clearly explain technical concepts and summarize analyses to a wide audience, and translate business objectives into actionable solutions
  • Lead technology projects across multiple stakeholder groups, including communicating regular and detailed progress reports
  • Clearly communicate at a high level while demonstrating attention to detail
  • Manage aggressive project timelines and clearly communicate trade-offs for choosing one path versus another
  • Think Big to deliver solutions that address global challenges
  • Ability to analyze highly complex data, draw conclusions and identify issues or trends
  • Define data dependencies or flows
  • Prioritize competing projects
  • Manage available resources given limited needs, timelines and budgets
  • Utilize SQL or Python to query tax databases
  • Consistently demonstrate a creative, positive and helpful attitude
  • Possess a team-oriented, customer-centric working style
