Data Engineer (Java)

As part of the data practice, we are focused on creating a modern architecture and software development practice that can deliver cloud, digital and agile transformations to our clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong software engineering background, will have worked in large teams and will be comfortable in a client-facing role. You will also be willing and able to contribute to the 6point6 internal data practice strategy and thought leadership.

Responsibilities

• Resolve blocking issues and technical debt that may affect the delivery of business deliverables
• Implement data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and business intelligence (BI) systems
• Re-engineer manual data flows to enable scaling and repeatable use
• Deliver high quality implementation and documentation for critical functionality
• Deliver code, unit tests, feature tests, stubs and integration tests
• Operate in an agile environment as part of a scrum team and participate in sprint rituals
• Work with members of multiple skills to understand designs, functional requirements and triage issues

• Exposure to working in a DataOps team, focused on data reliability engineering

Requirements

• Knowledge of back-end programming, specifically Java and Python with understanding of design patterns such as Dependency Injection
• Able to write high-performance, reliable and maintainable code
• Analytical and problem-solving skills applicable to big data cluster-based technologies
• Ideally some experience of developing applications making use of Spark, Kafka, Kafka Streams and Flink for data ingestion, transformation and processing
• Knowledge of SQL/NoSQL database structures, theories, principles, modelling and practices
• Knowledge of distributed programming, including threading and concurrent programming concepts
• Experience working in an agile team delivery context
• Experience with AWS big data technologies such as MSK, Kenesis, S3, Redshift, Athena, ElasticSearch, EMR and Glue
