We are looking for a Research Scientist to help us define and build the next generation of ML-based audio technologies. We are an interdisciplinary team of research scientists and engineers focused on ensuring that the foundations of Spotify technologies are at or above the state of the art and, in the process, on advancing our field. Our research enables efficient and intuitive ways to experience, organise, search, or re-use audio and music. We build products for end-users, artists, producers, labels, publishers, and advertisers - projects that cut across all of Spotify. We build features to improve products and lay the foundations for ground-breaking new product opportunities.

What you'll do:

  • You will participate in pioneering research in ML-based Audio Processing, Music Information Retrieval, and Machine Learning.
  • You will apply your scientific knowledge to develop and evaluate methods combining machine learning, signal processing, probabilistic modeling, and many other fields.
  • You will run experiments at scale, having access to a catalog of 80M+ songs, 400M+ monthly active users, and making use of Spotify’s computing infrastructure.
  • You will work on practical applications enabling users and internal teams to search and experience Spotify's content in novel ways.
  • You will be a valued member of an autonomous, cross-functional team working in collaboration with other scientists, engineers, product managers, designers, user researchers, and analysts across Spotify to design creative solutions to challenging problems.
  • You will have a direct impact on Spotify’s products, tools, and services, working on projects that cut across the entire organization.
  • External engagement such as publishing, giving talks, and attending top conferences is encouraged.

Who you are:

  • You have a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field. Previous industry experience is a plus.
  • You have experience working with music audio data in one or more of the following fields: Machine Learning, Music Information Retrieval, Speech Processing, Signal Processing, Probabilistic Modeling, or related areas.
  • Your work has been published at venues such as ICASSP, ISMIR, Interspeech, ICLR, AAAI, IJCAI, NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, or related.
  • You have strong programming skills and know-how to write maintainable code in the following languages/libraries: Python, NumPy, and TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • You are a creative problem solver who is passionate about building outstanding products that add real value to millions of people.
  • You are enthusiastic about learning more about audio processing and music information retrieval as well as developing research ideas into products operating at scale.
  • You can explain complex topics in simple terms, and you love building strong relationships with colleagues and collaborators.
