Job Summary:

Octave is looking for a Director of Data Engineering with demonstrated success leading a team of engineers at a startup. You will lead our Data Engineering team.

The ideal candidate for this role is a proactive, growth-minded, and people-focused leader.

As a leader, you’re eager to support the team in building iterative projects that help tangibly move the needle for our users and are comfortable rolling up your sleeves and helping wherever you’re needed. You thrive by helping your team thrive.

Technically, you’re a proficient engineer, particularly on data infrastructure, and have an affinity for leading and participating in discussions about all things data platform/warehousing.

We are a small but growing team who work remotely, using Python, PostgreSQL, gRPC, React, TypeScript and GraphQL in the application stack along with AWS, Redshift, Glue, PySpark, SQL, Airbyte and Tableau in the data stack.

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Help set your team up to thrive at Octave. Regularly meet with your team via one-on-ones. Understand what is/isn’t working and help them problem solve therein. Support areas of growth and career development.
  • Collaborate with technical leadership, and other cross-functional stakeholders to define our data strategy and architectural vision. 
  • Help ensure smooth and incremental delivery of high-quality data products/infrastructure that enables Octave to unlock insights from its data.
  • Make informed decisions based on data. We like to operate scientifically, make hypotheses and measure the results.
  • Help refine and drive our hiring efforts.

 

Education & Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience managing a team (or teams) of software engineers at a startup. This includes helping with career development, decision making and leadership. This includes helping with career development, decision making, and leadership.
  • 5+ years of data engineering experience, with experience in building/maintaining scalable data infrastructure
  • Expertise with the Python, PySpark, and the AWS/Google Cloud Big Data ecosystem
  • Expertise in building out data pipelines, ETL design (both implementation and maintenance), and data warehousing
  • Deep knowledge of SQL
  • Experience building products from the ground up as well as improving existing products; willingness to roll up your sleeves to achieve outcomes. 
  • Empathy & perspective for end-users and stakeholders with strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to assess and synthesize information and share in an accessible way. 
  • Curious and teachable; a growth mindset towards building new skills and taking on new responsibilities as our business needs mature and change.
  • Willingness to be a servant leader.
  • Nice to have (truly): growth experience, experience in healthcare, experience working in other regulated fields (education, security)

 

Overview:

  • Octave is a full-stack behavioral health services company: we employ therapists, contract with insurance providers for reimbursing care, and run our own tech stack to support across the business. We are a technology-enabled service provider working to increase access to mental health care for insured people in the US. Automation and strong systems are the lynchpin for enabling scale and driving access for more people to get care.
  • The team is distributed across the US and has varied backgrounds, from education to fitness, advertising, travel, and healthcare. The role is virtual.
  • This role reports to our VP of Technology

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to frequently communicate with others through virtual meeting applications such as Zoom and Google Meet. 
  • Must be able to observe and communicate information on company provided laptop. 
  • Move up to 10 pounds on occasion. 
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

 

Compensation:

 

Octave is committed to pay equity. Starting pay for qualified applicants will depend on a combination of job-related factors, which may include education, training, experience, location, business needs, or market demands. The expected salary range for this role is set forth below and this range may be modified in the future. 

 

The salary range for this role is $190,000 - $225,000.

 

Additionally, this position is eligible for the following benefits: company sponsored life insurance, disability and AD&D plans. Voluntary benefits such as 401k retirement, medical, dental, vision, FSA, HSA, dependent care and commuter/parking options are also available. Octave offers generous Paid Time Off as well as paid parental leave benefits.
