The Personalization team makes deciding what to play next easier and more enjoyable for every listener. From Daily Mix to Discover Weekly, we’re behind some of Spotify’s most-loved features. We built them by understanding the world of music and podcasts better than anyone else. Join us and you’ll keep millions of users listening by making great recommendations to each and every one of them. We ask that our team members be physically located in Central European time or Eastern Standard/Daylight time zones for the purposes of our collaboration hours.
We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our team to join our team of passionate engineers who share a common interest in data and ML systems, their scalability and continued development. We own and actively improve some of Spotify's most loved personalization products (Discover Weekly, Release Radar, This Is, Fresh Finds). Our mission sits in the center of users and artists, helping listeners find their favorite new music and helping artists build devoted fan bases. 
You will build data driven solutions and partner with machine learning engineers to thoughtfully connect users with new music, and artists with new listeners. You'll create new personalized playlists to build value for artists, and improve our playlists that already reach 100s of millions of people every week.

What You'll Do

  • Help users discover new music they'll love.
  • Help artists build fan bases with better matching algorithms and targeting functionality Improve some of Spotify's most well-loved products, like Discover Weekly and Release Radar.
  • Build large-scale batch and real-time data pipelines with data processing frameworks like Scalding, Scio, Storm, Spark and the Google Cloud Platform.
  • Use best practices in continuous integration and delivery.
  • Help drive optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality.
  • Collaborate with other software engineers, ML experts and stakeholders, taking learning and leadership opportunities that will arise every single day.
  • Work in multi-functional agile teams to continuously experiment, iterate and deliver on new product objectives!
  • Hack on what you want during regular hack days and bi-annual hack weeks.

Who You Are

  • You have professional software engineering and programming experience (SQL, Java, C++, Scala, Python).
  • You are comfortable with data warehouses such as Redshift, Snowflake, or BigQuery.
  • You are knowledgeable about data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques.
  • You have experience with architecture and design (patterns, reliability, scalability, quality) of complex systems.
  • You appreciate agile software processes, data-driven development, reliability, and responsible experimentation.

Where You'll Be

  • We are a distributed workforce enabling our band members to find a work mode that is best for them.
  • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas region in which we have a work location and is within working hours.
  • You will be working with a team that is largely based in Boston and New York. We collaborate within the Eastern Standard time zone and ask that you be comfortable with that.
