Reports to: Vice Principal, Academic & Operations 
Status: Permanent Full-Time 
Site: The Michener Institute 
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications; consistent with Michener Compensation Policy

Position Summary: 

As the Academic Chair you will lead faculty in the development of their curriculum, teaching commitments and professional development. Your day-to-day responsibilities include leading the advancement of new program/course delivery strategies, building relationships and liaising with clinical placement sites and potential business partners. You support Michener’s reputation for quality as you ensure on-going compliance, continuous quality improvement and accreditation preparation. You thrive in a collaborative team-based working environment and embrace interprofessional education. You effectively lead strong teams, promoting collaboration and managing employee issues and concerns. You consistently promote Best Experience, Best Education, modelling a student-centered approach and monitoring activities that are integral to student enrollment and engagement. 

The Academic Chair reports to the Vice Principal, Academic & Operations and is responsible to manage, sustain, support, monitor and grow Michener’s academic programs. This includes current academic programs, development of new programs, and the associated academic issues, such as the recruitment and retention of students, setting program targets, ensuring the appropriate credentialing of students graduating from these programs, interaction with relevant accreditation and regulatory bodies, etc. The Academic Chair will achieve this by working together with other academic departments such as the Registrars Office, Student life and faculty. 

Given the nature of Michener programs, the preferred candidate has a broad background in health care and academic administration, particularly in laboratory medicine and/or those of potential future growth. A preferred candidate is one who has harmonious and productive relationships with regulators and the accreditation bodies relevant to Michener programs. Applicants should be comfortable with technology and willing to embrace new and innovative modes of pedagogy, teaching and learning. 

Michener is a highly collaborative community and the Academic Chair must work with other leaders, faculty and Chairs, to advance and enhance the academic quality and reputation of Michener and its graduates, particularly in light of Michener’s key role of meeting the Health Human Resource (HHR) needs of Ontario and beyond.

Qualifications

  • Significant, typically more than 5 years, experience in health care and post-secondary education. 
  • Minimum Masters degree in Healthcare, administration or related field preferred.
  • Experience, proven relationships, and success in working with health professions regulatory colleges and government regulatory bodies such as PEQAB considered an asset. 
  • Experience leading teams in a unionized environment considered an asset 
  • Openness and willingness to consider and implement new modes of pedagogy and innovative methods of teaching and learning. 
  • A commitment towards a framework of Strategic Enrolment Management (SEM), including student recruitment, retention, and success. 
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with evidence of: initiative, innovation, sound decision-making and planning, persistence in the face of obstacles, creativity, resourcefulness, resiliency, an ability to collaborate with others, a sense of humor, integrity, and a willingness to accept responsibility and be accountable for results. 
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing the quality of the post-secondary experience for students and faculty and staff. 
  • Understanding and promotion of the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion. The ideal candidate must be able to foster an open, sensitive, and supportive environment where students and staff feel valued and can voice their concerns. 
  • Advanced knowledge of the systems used at Michener such as MS office suite Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint. Scheduling software knowledge is an asset. 
  • Satisfactory Canadian Police Clearance document required upon hire.
