Lead Data Scientist - MLOps

London, Greater London, UK

“We are on a mission to transform the future of grocery retail through sustained technology innovation.”

Ocado Technology is putting the world’s retailers online using advanced artificial intelligence, robotics, big data, the cloud, and IoT. We develop the innovative software and hardware systems that power Ocado.com, as well as the unique ‘Ocado Smart Platform’ which is being implemented by ambitious retailers across the world from Europe to America, Asia and beyond. With everything from websites to highly automated warehouses that we design in-house, our employees are skilled specialists with expertise across a wide range of technologies, working on cutting-edge innovations that are shaping the future of society.

A little about the team...

Data Science already powers products and capabilities in every part of Ocado Technology but we’re really just getting started. The Data Science - Strategy and Operations team was set up this year to ensure that Ocado Technology gets the best out of Data Science, and that it’s a brilliant place to be a Data Scientist. We’re recruiting for two new team members (making five in total) to deliver on this mission. We will need you to;

  • Drive a consistent strategy around the use of data and data science across Ocado Technology
  • Identify and embed data science best practices including in MLOps, knowledge-sharing, and responsible and beneficial data innovation.
  • Ensure that Ocado Technology can take advantage of developments in data science research and innovation.

What will you do?

You will be a part of a small team working on high impact tasks with multiple stakeholders.  You’ll take the lead on ‘MLOps’, defining and delivering the tooling and infrastructure that will make doing data science at Ocado as simple (and effective) as shopping online. You’ll need to strike a balance between flexibility for different users and the need for standards and best practices; and find ways to make the platform responsive to changing requirements and emerging capabilities. You’ll keep up with the latest relevant technologies, participate in user- and special interest groups, and understand trends and opportunities.

You will naturally be involved in other aspects of the team’s work too.

  • Identifying opportunities to improve how we do Data Science
  • Creating content and events to support Data Science knowledge-sharing and story-telling inside and outside of Ocado Technology
  • Developing tools for Data Scientists
  • Implementing new processes, perhaps tailoring existing frameworks like the Machine Learning Canvas or Consequence Scanning agile methodology
  • Ensuring that we use data responsibly and in accordance with Ocado Technology’s values

You will have a high degree of autonomy (and consequent responsibility) to make a difference and make your mark. You will collaborate with teams across Ocado Technology to solve critical problems and gain exposure to data science in diverse applications from demand forecasting, search, recommendations, routing, object detection and robotic control

We're interested in people with..

  • Have hands-on experience of ‘MLOps’ processes and tooling, ideally in more than one company or context
  • Have a solid understanding of data science and machine learning through its full life-cycle and the business impact it can have
  • Are a proactive problem-solver, comfortable with ambiguity
  • Are a great story-teller, who can tailor content and complexity to your audiences
  • Can readily build productive alliances and manage complex stakeholder relationships

Bonus points if you also have experience in;

  • Technology Change Management experience
  • Data and Data Science Policy and Strategy
  • Community Building
  • Responsible AI
  •
