Xero Small Business Insights (XSBI) uses aggregated, anonymised data to generate insights about the small business economy. XSBI enables Xero to champion on behalf of small business by showcasing trends, challenges and opportunities evidenced from our data. This provides a valuable source of timely data for economists, policy makers and governments seeking to better the lives of small businesses globally.
The XSBI team is a small team of data enthusiasts based in Melbourne who are passionate about using insights to drive positive change for small businesses. 
You’ll work within the Global XSBI team to understand data quality, undertake data collection, perform data analysis and identify areas of opportunity for future improvements. You will work across a number of exciting projects to deliver information and compelling insights in an accessible and unambiguous way. 
This is an exciting and unique role, providing many opportunities to learn and grow as the XSBI brand scales globally.

What you’ll do

  • Data analysis, extraction and interrogation in line with our strategic objectives
  • Work with the XSBI team and collaboratively with other business units across Xero, both locally and remotely
  • Develop and implement standardised, scalable pipelines to achieve project objectives and strategic outcomes
  • Contribute to the execution, maintenance and extension of our pipelines (which includes the monthly delivery of the Small Business Index)
  • Undertake exploratory research
  • Identify, investigate and collaborate with others to solve data/process issues as part of our focus on operational excellence
  • Other contributions as required by the XSBI team

What you’ll bring with you

  • Fast learner, team player, and detail oriented
  • Enjoys unravelling complexity and can demonstrate effective problem solving skills
  • Can self-manage your workload and manage expectations with stakeholders
  • Can deliver in a changing work environment
  • Ability to collect, collate and interpret business requirements
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to interact with stakeholders and share knowledge with the team
  • Inquisitive, has a passion for data and is comfortable using data discovery tools to work with the Data Team’s supplied data sets and bring new processes to the team
  • 3-5 years of experience in a data analytics role
  • Intermediate to advanced SQL skills
  • Programming experience in Python or R
  • Strong analytical skills at the macro and micro level, including handling personal and identifiable information
  • Familiarity with big data (Spark/Pyspark), analytic engines (Presto/Hive/Snowflake)
  • Familiarity with notebook environments (Jupyter/Zeppelin)
  • Experience with transformation, data quality, and orchestration tools (dbt/Airflow/Metaflow) is desired
  • Familiarity with accounting concepts is desirable
