To help us achieve our goal, we are seeking a Data Engineering Manager eager to make an impact within a mission-driven organization.

The Data Engineering Manager is an experienced, detail-oriented engineering manager that plays a key role in the overall success of the engineering team by planning, managing, and monitoring engineering functions. You will be responsible for overseeing various engineering projects, processes, capacity, and timelines and making any necessary adjustments in order to ensure successful completion.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  1. Serve as the engineering leader and technical expert
  2. Ensure the quality and timely delivery of the technical solutions
  3. Ensure the technical solutions are robust, reliable and optimal
  4. Ensure the team is aligned with the product vision
  5. Ensure the team is aligned with engineering practice

Duties include but not limited to:

  1. Lead the product engineering teams to develop optimal solutions to the business problems.
  2. Lead the product engineering teams from the solution ideation, development, testing, validation to production release
  3. Partner with Product Management, Product Design and Architecture team to make sure the teams are aligned with product vision, UX strategy, architectural directions
  4. Provide in-depth feedback to the engineers for the code quality and the approaches they’re taking at the low level design
  5. Facilitate technical discussions and workshops
  6. Resolve issues brought forth by engineering team members
  7. Create detailed engineering plans, processes, and procedures for engineering staff to use and abide by
  8. Check and confirm the accuracy of the work performed and the methods used by engineering staff
  9. Propose and oversee capacity and timelines for engineering projects
  10. Monitor and determine various staffing and training needs
  11. Hire, train, and supervise engineering staff members
  12. Spearhead various research and development initiatives to identify opportunities for new projects and improved processes
  13. Communicate and collaborate with other teams, suppliers, and contractors
  14. Prepare and deliver various engineering-related presentations, both internally and externally

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  1. Experience scaling and managing 6+ person engineering teams
  2. 5+ years of experience in Data Architecture
  3. 3+ years of experience in Cloud data engineering (S3, RDS, Redshift)
  4. Demonstrated strength in SQL, data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing
  5. Coding proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, etc.)
  6. Experience mentoring and managing other Data Engineers, ensuring data engineering best practices are being followed
  7. Communication and leadership experience, with experience initiating and driving projects
  8. Experience leading data driven discussions & designing scalable data platforms
  9. Proactive problem solver
  10. Strong team leader
  11. Ability to multitask and thrive in a timeline-driven environment
  12. Resource and capacity management
  13. Knowledge of industry best practices and the ability to evaluate the applicability of new processes and technologies
  14. Analytical and mathematical mind, capable of evaluating and solving various complex problems
  15. Organizational competencies and project management skills to keep projects, processes, and the entire engineering team on track
  16. Interpersonal communication skills with expertise in distilling complicated topics to a broader audience
  17. Ability to work individually or as part of a team
  18. Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering
  19. Master’s degree in engineering management or business administration preferred
  20. 6+ years of engineering experience, ideally in a management role in the recent 2-3 years

Skills/Competencies

  1. Excellent problem-solving and people skills – Communicate ideas effectively to resolve conflicts and achieve business goals. A focus on people and outcomes, not simply output. Strong problem solving skills, including providing simple solutions to complex situations.
  2. Strong technical skills - Proven track record of successful commercial software releases. Broad and deep experience of software development lifecycle end to end. The experience and ability to solve difficult technical problems. Deep running knowledge of programming languages, software design both front-end and back-end, design patterns, anti-patterns, testing techniques and infrastructure.
    • Programming languages and frameworks (any 2 or more of NODE.js, REACT, REACT NATIVE, Java)
    • Infrastructure - deep understanding of at least one of (AWS, Mulesoft)
  3. Strong communication and presentation skills – Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor. Must have the ability to communicate accurately and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  4. Knowledge of field organizational strategies – The ability to adapt to a rapidly changing work environment. Successful decentralized team management and situational responsive decision-making.
  5. Team management and collaborative capabilities – Commitment to collaboration, within and across departments. Leverages each team member’s unique background and perspective to achieve team goals while providing clear direction and accountabilities. Must be a strong team player with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with teams working in multiple locations.
  6. Interpersonal Savvy – Understands interpersonal and group dynamics and reacts in an effective and tactful manner. Has a range of interpersonal skills, with the ability to select a best-fit approach.
  7. Professionalism and integrity in all actions – Demonstrated ability to foster concepts of teamwork, cooperation, self-control and flexibility to get the work done. Detail-oriented individual with a passion for learning new skills, technologies and best practices.


Capabilities
Up to 5% travel, as needed, for project team meetings, client presentations and other professional meetings/conferences as needed

Ability to communicate in English (both verbal and written)

REPORTING
The incumbent reports directly to Director of Platform Engineering or Director of Client Engineering who will provide general direction and guidance. Incumbent is expected to perform duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.
