An extension of ATB Financial, ATB Ventures was started back in 2018, knowing that the convergence of data with powerful emerging technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence, and machine learning would pave the way for major disruption and value creation that exceeded the digital transformation of the past 20 years.

Today, ATB Ventures is a team of engineers, data scientists, product managers, and business operators who having been building emerging solutions from scratch - including Open ATB> Open AI, Open Data, API Sandbox, Oliu (Self-Sovereign Digital ID platform), Proof (Digital credential wallet) and more.

We're looking for a Lead Data Scientist who can read between the lines of a database and tell the story underneath. Together, we will build high impact data products that can truly solve for Alberta.

You’re an analytical thinker with depth and experience in high impact data science methods and applications. You know how to work on diverse, interdisciplinary teams. You stand by your data - lending insights and providing causes for action.

Summary of key responsibilities | What you will be responsible for day-to-day...

• Collaborate with Venture teams to identify new horizons to explore and ideate on the impactful opportunities
• Work with other team members in Design Sprints focused on proving out concepts and building prototypes. Further investigate an idea by creating respective hypotheses, and designing analytical methods to test the hypotheses.
• Implement algorithms, write efficient AI/ML code and modules/microservices/containers for advanced analytical solutions.
• Explore and learn what best practices as well as state of the art AI/ML techniques exist to solve complex problems. Deploy mathematics, optimization, statistics, and analytical techniques to design and execute solutions for those problems
• Design and develop Data and AI products, and work with software engineers to bring these products to life. Leveraging open source before seeking proprietary solutions.
• Research and analyze data to find deep relations that can be used in AI/ML algorithms
• Explore patentable opportunities at all phases of the Innovation funnel (Proof of concepts, prototypes or MVPs)

Requirements

Helpful skills & experience | What we're looking for in the ideal candidate...

• BSc in Computer Science or Engineering is required (an MSc or PhD degree in Engineering or Computer Science would be desirable)
• 4+ years of relevant experience in Data Science
• Experience in designing and building data and AI products
• Strong mathematical, statistical and analytical skills
• Experience in design and implementation of AI/ML algorithms to solve complex problem
• Experience in delivery of a wide variety of data science applications, such as machine vision, natural language processing, predictive analytics, time series analysis, optimization, anomaly detection, reinforcement learning, among others
• Demonstrate strong programming skills with R, Python, JavaScript and solid experience with related ML/AI packages such as Pandas, Numpy, Tensorflow, Pytorch, Keras, Natural Language Processing
• Experience with Object Oriented Methodologies and Agile principles.
• Experience in a wide range of industries is highly desirable (industries such as supply chain, transportation, mining, health care, finance, manufacturing, quantum computing, etc)
• Demonstrate a continuous learning mentality
• Strong communication skills: verbal, written and visual
• Familiarity with MATLAB toolboxes and and R libraries are highly desirable (preferably Math, Optimization, Statistics, Image processing and Computer Vision, Signal processing, Control Systems, etc)
• Excellent prototyping skills are required; also, solid knowledge of data mining and SQL
• Cloud experience in GCP is preferred; alternatively, experience in AWS, Azure, or IBM Cloud is also desirable
