Senior Data Scientist, Virtual Interlining

Preferred qualifications• A degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering or other quantitative disciplines• Experience with stochastic programming or other mathematical optimization problems• Hands-on experience with major cloud computing platforms such as GCP, AWS, Azure.• Experience with building and understanding ML models in common frameworks (eg TensorFlow)• Extremely strong analytical and problem-solving skills• A strong passion for and extensive experience in conducting empirical research and answering hard questions with data• Experience working with extremely large data sets• Strong programming skills• Experience in Pandas or R; relational databases and SQL, especially HiveExperience with data mining, machine learning, statistical modeling tools and underlying algorithms• Proven ability to communicate complex technical work to a non-technical audience• [ Bonus ] Experience with Airflow, Spark, Bash

About the teamThe mission of the Virtual Interlining team is to guarantee that Hopper is able to offer the most competitive and robust inventory selection for our customers. We collect 30 billion airfare quotes every day from flight searches happening across the web, with about seven years of historical data, so we can track prices, measure interest, and ultimately detect price trends to know what is the best price for a given route. We now want to leverage this vast data infrastructure to make travel more accessible for our customers by offering a more robust, unique, and cheaper flight inventory selection that users cannot find elsewhere. We aim to do this by building sophisticated flight search optimization algorithms to solve complex travel planning and pricing problems and construct new inventory that improves our pricing and selection for customers.
About the roleWe’re looking for a data master to join our team as a Senior Data Scientist to drive data-centric product development and marketplace growth in collaboration with our high-performing team of PMs, operations research scientists, and engineers. 
You will work closely with the team to build highly performant pricing models and identify areas for inventory pricing improvement, conduct analyses to understand the effectiveness of our inventory construction and model risk, and ultimately help deliver higher performing route optimization.

Responsibilities

• Partner with product and engineering teams to contribute to product improvements and initiatives. Frame and conduct complex analyses and model building needed to deepen our understanding of air pricing trends and our users. 
• Use machine learning and big data tools on tremendously large and complex data to deepen our data-driven travel planning and pricing modeling.
• Conduct research into various aspects of our product and employ modeling techniques to make recommendations to non-technical stakeholders.
