Senior Principal Data Engineer (Remote)

The Role
Commercial Analytics in Europe is a new venture for Veeva. Our objective is to use Advanced Analytics and Machine Learning to help the Life Sciences Industry engaging with Health Care Professionals in a relevant way and improve patient care. If you are excited about building a new offering in a start-up mode, developing and scaling data and advanced analytics solutions as well as working with a diverse group of expert colleagues, then joining our Commercial Analytics team is the right step for you. Being part of an incubating venture will mean that we will face opportunities and challenges that today are unknown. As such you will not have all the required knowledge today but are curious and willing to learn and grow as a professional that is open to take on new opportunities for advancement. As the Senior Principal Data Engineer, you will be reporting to the Director of Commercial Analytics in Europe and be part of the initial leadership team. Your responsibility will be to lead the data engineering-related activities as well as designing and owning the overall technical solution architecture. In addition, you will help to grow our data engineering team and take on the responsibility as Technical Product Owner to work with the Senior Principal Data Scientist and Advanced Analytics Manager to define the product roadmap. The Senior Principal Data Engineer will closely work with our Advanced Analytics Manager as well as with customers in order to stay close to the business problems we aim to solve. You will design the code pipeline for the overall solution with the aim to achieve customer success and productize the different solution components. You will also lead the data engineering efforts overseeing and supporting hands-on implementation, ensure quality control and align with other disciplines, e.g., data science, business experts to ensure overall solution delivery. You are entrepreneurial, meaning that you take action fast and bring up new ideas if you see opportunities to improve what we do. As we grow you will help to recruit new colleagues as well as take responsibility for their professional development. You will build our data engineering community by defining the agenda of extracurricular activities which can include research initiatives, conference participation, or support of social impact initiatives. We are a Work Anywhere company and this position is remote with light travel in Europe to meet with customers or team members.

What You'll Do

• Be part of the initial Commercial Analytics leadership team that will define our solution offering
• Design and own delivery of end-2-end solution architecture connecting data engineering, data science, and consumption layer
• Lead the Veeva Data Engineering team to develop and deliver commercial analytics solutions with customers and take responsibility for the implementation of data engineering deliverables end-to-end providing hands-on support
• Take on the responsibility as the technical product owner to develop the innovation roadmap, set up the product team, and oversee execution
• Own organizational data engineering expertise ensuring continuous learning, and ensure the tools we use are up to date
• Build the team of data engineers making Veeva their first choice, develop a strong team spirit, lead community initiatives and support the professional development of your colleagues

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a strong quantitative focus in a relevant field, e.g., computer science, engineering
• 5-10 years professional experience as a data engineer, machine learning engineer, big data solution architect, or related roles covering design, implementation, and automation of pipelines for data ingestion, cleaning, structuring, and further processing, working on structured and unstructured data
• 3+ years of experience leading data engineering teams within a business context applying software engineering best practices
• Recent hands-on proficiency in coding languages required for implementing data engineering tasks including SQL, Python, and R, as well as knowledge and experience using big data tools, e.g., Hadoop, MongoDB, PySpark, Kafka
• Solid knowledge of the latest data science and data engineering innovation and techniques
• Excellent critical thinking and analysis skills as well as a passion and curiosity for developing innovative advanced analytics solutions in a business environment
• Strong ownership to drive the team to success keeping in mind the overall goals we aim to achieve
• Strong written and oral communication skills with different audiences
• Great team player that collaborates with diverse colleagues from different disciplines and backgrounds
• An inclusive approach to solving our problems considering perspectives from all colleagues
• Ability to travel within Europe 1-2 times per month
