We are Zego - a commercial motor insurance provider that powers opportunities for businesses, from entire fleets of vehicles to self-employed drivers and riders. We combine best-in-class technology with sophisticated data sources to offer insurance products that save businesses time and money.
Since our inception, we have believed that the problem with traditional insurance is that it holds businesses back. It’s too expensive and time consuming, and it no longer suits businesses who use vehicles to earn money. Our products represent a solution to this problem for businesses based across the UK, Europe and beyond.
So far, we have raised over $200 million in funding and we were the first UK insurtech to be valued at over $1 billion. We were also the first to be awarded our own insurance license and recently won Tech Company of the Year 2020.
At Zego, we are proud to say we have a diverse and inclusive team, unified by our shared values and mission. Our people are the most important part of our story and everybody at Zego, no matter their role, has an integral part to play.
Overview of the Behavioral Data Team
The Behavioural Data team deals primarily on understanding driver’s behaviours using, amongst others, the sensors on the driver’s smartphone. We focus on all aspects of the data pipeline, including collecting, ingesting and processing sensor and contextual data that allow us, for example, to differentiate between different modes of transportation or to accurately identify driving events that are highly correlated with the actual risk of accident (e.g. harsh brakes, distracted driving).
We work in a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and engineers to develop highly scalable systems that use digital signal processing and machine learning to process these high-frequency streams of sensor and contextual data, in order to generate comprehensive and precise insights, as well as, finding the best ways to deploy, monitor (reliability, accuracy), and how to continuously evolve these systems.
Purpose of Role
You will be working with a world-class team of data scientists and engineers to lead the future of car insurance. You will play a key role in generating meaningful knowledge from data and answer difficult questions that can drive the development of the new generation of behaviour-based insurance. This role for someone with
What you will be working on
- You will use advanced digital signal processing techniques to extract relevant driving behaviour information through the analysis of motion sensor data. Experience with processing geospatial data and/or sensor data from mobile devices or wearable is a plus
- You will frame complex physical problems and systems into individual and simpler pieces that enable us to quickly build data processing pipelines to test hypotheses and swiftly deploy new products into production
- You will apply, or will coordinate with other data scientists to apply, machine learning techniques in order to train algorithms related to activity detection and human behavior analysis
- You will effectively communicate insights and present complex analysis using data visualization techniques
What you will need to be successful
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or Mathematics
- Knowledge of signal processing (signal modeling, projections, decompositions, and transformations), sensor physics is a plus
- You possess a strong knowledge of software development process, and have the ability to develop efficient and scalable code
- Ability to build solutions from scratch including writing and navigating code and requesting data from data sources
- You are are interested in learning modern Python machine learning tools and libraries and to build strong capabilities in querying structured data using SQL
