We are Zego - a commercial motor insurance provider that powers opportunities for businesses, from entire fleets of vehicles to self-employed drivers and riders. We combine best-in-class technology with sophisticated data sources to offer insurance products that save businesses time and money.

Since our inception, we have believed that the problem with traditional insurance is that it holds businesses back. It’s too expensive and time consuming, and it no longer suits businesses who use vehicles to earn money. Our products represent a solution to this problem for businesses based across the UK, Europe and beyond.

So far, we have raised over $200 million in funding and we were the first UK insurtech to be valued at over $1 billion. We were also the first to be awarded our own insurance license and recently won Tech Company of the Year 2020.

At Zego, we are proud to say we have a diverse and inclusive team, unified by our shared values and mission. Our people are the most important part of our story and everybody at Zego, no matter their role, has an integral part to play.

Overview of the Behavioral Data Team

The Behavioural Data team deals primarily on understanding driver’s behaviours using, amongst others, the sensors on the driver’s smartphone. We focus on all aspects of the data pipeline, including collecting, ingesting and processing sensor and contextual data that allow us, for example, to differentiate between different modes of transportation or to accurately identify driving events that are highly correlated with the actual risk of accident (e.g. harsh brakes, distracted driving).

We work in a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and engineers to develop highly scalable systems that use digital signal processing and machine learning to process these high-frequency streams of sensor and contextual data, in order to generate comprehensive and precise insights, as well as, finding the best ways to deploy, monitor (reliability, accuracy), and how to continuously evolve these systems.

Purpose of Role

As a Data Scientist at Zego, you will be working with a world-class team of data scientists and engineers to lead the future of car insurance. You will play a key role in generating meaningful knowledge from data and answer difficult questions that can drive the development of the new generation of behaviour-based insurance. This role is ideally suited for candidates experienced in solving complex computational and statistical problems and exposure to digital signal processing or telematics.

What you will be working on

  • You will translate high-level business requirements into concrete data science problems and own the delivery of data models from research up to deployment and model improvement
  • You will quickly build data processing pipelines to test and iterate on new hypotheses, enabling the faster deployment of new ideas and products into production
  • You will extract relevant driving behaviour information through the analysis of geolocation, motion sensor, contextual data, or other relevant data sources
  • You will apply your data expertise to surface key insights that will help drive decision-making, and develop data tools that will improve our ability to understand human behavior and its correlation with risk
  • You will coordinate with different functional teams to implement key performance metrics and monitor outcomes, both for your models and Zego’s products
  • You will effectively communicate insights and present complex analysis using data visualization techniques

What you will need to be successful

  • You have a BSc or equivalent in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or similarly quantitative disciplines
  • You have at least 4 years of experience in designing and deploying machine learning pipelines into production
  • You have previous experience with digital signals, signal processing or telematics (experience working with geospatial information is a plus)
  • You are well-versed in modern Python machine learning tools and libraries and proficient in querying structured data using SQL
  • You have the ability to clearly document your work and present complex information in an easily digestible format, appropriate for the audience
  • You are able to work in a cross-functional team, with data scientists and engineers in different domains
  • You are a strong contributor to the data science practice inside Zego with interest in growing the data science team.
