We are Zego - a commercial motor insurance provider that powers opportunities for businesses, from entire fleets of vehicles to self-employed drivers and riders. We combine best-in-class technology with sophisticated data sources to offer insurance products that save businesses time and money.

Since our inception, we have believed that the problem with traditional insurance is that it holds businesses back. It’s too expensive and time-consuming, and it no longer suits businesses that use vehicles to earn money. Our products represent a solution to this problem for businesses based across the UK, Europe and beyond.

So far, we have raised over $200 million in funding and we were the first UK insurtech to be valued at over $1 billion. We were also the first to be awarded our own insurance license and recently won Tech Company of the Year 2020.

At Zego, we are proud to say we have a diverse and inclusive team, unified by our shared values and mission. Our people are the most important part of our story and everybody at Zego, no matter their role, has an integral part to play.

Overview of the Data Enrichments Team

The Data Enrichments team is responsible for all the products, and oversight of the projects, that aim to further enhance our understanding of risk (e.g. driving context data, credit scoring data) and the of all the data products built on top of the telematics data (e.g. accident detection and reconstruction).

We work in a multidisciplinary team of data scientists and engineers to develop highly scalable systems that help to identify, combine and surface new features from internal and external data sources, such as our telematics and external contextual data sources (e.g. weather, traffic) as well as other relevant third-party data relationships (e.g. work provider data). Our goal is to help enable Zego’s unique understanding of risk, to help improve our claims processing and to enable the development of new value propositions for Zego’s customers.

Purpose of Role

You will be working with a world-class team of data scientists and engineers to lead the future of car insurance. You will play a key role in generating meaningful knowledge from data and answer difficult questions that can drive the development of the new generation of our data-based insurance products.

What you will be working on

  • You will build solutions on data science problems and own the delivery of data models from research up to deployment and model improvement based on the business requirements
  • You will quickly build data processing pipelines to test and iterate on new hypotheses, enabling the faster deployment of new ideas and products into production
  • You will lead on the exploration of the opportunities to leverage complementary data to the telemetry information with additional contextual data that can further help to distinguish adverse (dangerous) driving behaviour and improve the pricing algorithms
  • You will develop and test hypotheses for automatic crash detection that can power a much faster and reliable claims handling process
  • You will coordinate with different functional teams to implement key performance metrics and monitor outcomes, both for your models and Zego’s products
  • You will effectively communicate insights and present complex analysis using data visualization techniques

What you will need to be successful

  • You have a BSc or equivalent in Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science or similar quantitative disciplines
  • You have at least 4 years of experience in designing and deploying machine learning pipelines into production
  • You are well-versed in modern Python machine learning tools and libraries
  • You know how to use relational and non-relational databases and are strongly proficient in querying using SQL. Experience with data engineering technologies (e.g. Kafka, queuing, blob/object storage) is a plus
  • You have the ability to clearly document your work and present complex information in an easily digestible format, appropriate for the audience
  • You are able to work in a cross-functional team, with data scientists and engineers in different domains
  • You are a strong contributor to the data science practice inside Zego with interest in growing the data science team.
