The RealReal’s Finance team is looking to hire a Senior Engineer, Transportation that will be an integral part of our growing team. The Sr. Engineer, Transportation is responsible for identifying, recommending and implementing improvement opportunities across the supply chain, including distribution centers, transportation and logistics. Provide local technical engineering support to the operations teams in the distribution centers in the areas of labor management, operational processes, facility design and layout, equipment, automation and measuring efficiency, quality and effectiveness in the operations and transportation. Results should improve productivity across the operations and reduce the cost per unit, increase speed of distribution of goods and help accuracy.

  • Operational Processes
  • Perform ongoing analysis of results and operational processes to identify opportunities to improve distribution center efficiencies/productivity and reduce distribution processing cost per unit
  • Recommend methods for improving distribution center associate efficiency and reducing waste of materials/utilities, reorganizing workflow and purchasing of equipment/tools
  • Analyze current work methods and procedures within operations and by job function to identify opportunities for improvement
  • Qualify and quantify key opportunities for improvement in operations and return-on-investment; build a business case to implement and present to leadership as appropriate
  •  Assist in the development & management of distribution center slotting strategy & processes to improve distribution center productivity, reduce distribution center throughput cycle time, improve distribution center safety performance, improve order accuracy, and reduce product damage.
  • Distribution Center Storage/Work Area/Material Handling and Automation Design
  • Analyze/evaluate existing distribution center storage design, material handling systems and automation and make recommendations to improve capacity, efficiency, and safety
  • Assist with the analysis of space utilization and efficient use of storage media for inventory. Make recommendations to improve layouts and space utilization and lead execution of changes.
  •  Identify scope and requirements for equipment or tools, quantity, solicit estimates, review proposals and make recommendations to management on best options for assets.
  • Collaborating with operations and finance teams to optimize retail & ecommerce logistics.
  • Communicating data insights and recommendations in a clear and concise manner through the use of presentations, visualizations, and reporting documents
  • Producing KPI reporting for Retail & eCommerce transportation activities, including supporting monthly/quarterly carrier/vendor reviews.
  • Participating in and lead transportation-related projects and help design the transportation strategy
  • Performing financial and statistical analysis reporting on eCommerce & Retail activities, annual budgets, and multi-year planning for transportation.
  • Analyzing data to develop actionable metrics to measure performance, trends, growth, forecast and cost.
  • Monitoring initiatives against benchmark metrics to pro-actively highlight areas of opportunity and improvement.
  • Running reports and analyze impact of vendor rate/service adjustments and vendor comparisons.
  • Identifying, justify and present continuous improvement plans to Management, for increasing efficiency, reducing costs and improving customer service.
  • Developing costing models to determine sourcing strategy.
  • Completing ad hoc assignments as needed.
  • Identify trends and forecast the impact that future efficiencies will have on Unit Economics
  • Perform monthly, quarterly and annual updates to the forecast
  • Conduct month end close reporting and analysis
  • Work with the BI team to develop reporting to provide more visibility and insight to both the Finance and Operations teams

What You Bring To The Role

  • BS/BA degree in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, or Business.
  • Experience managing all modes of transportation.
  • Strong analytical background in creating and analyzing reporting trends and performance.
  • 3 to 5 years of work experience, preferably in Transportation/Analytics at a high-growth startup or a large, well-established company - Labor Planning Experience a plus
  • Solid and improving Excel skills and proficient PowerPoint and Google Apps skills, experience in automation in Excel and/or Google Sheets preferred 
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills; ability to connect with team members and convey technical engineering information to non-financial professionals
  • Ability to work collaboratively across different functions and diverse personalities
  • Desire to work in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment
  • NetSuite, Adaptive Planning and/or Looker experience is a plus
