About the team
Knowing customers well is key to building #beautiful products. We are recruiting engineers to run and level up our behavioural analytics pipelines. Each day millions of product usage events are streamed into platforms that store, enriche, and ultimately present this information to inform product decisions.
Behavioural analytics sits within the Data Team, a collective of specialists driven by a shared mission to help establish Xero as the most insightful and trusted small business platform. Our backgrounds and work are diverse—we work on data platforms, data modelling, application development, applied machine learning research, ethics, literacy, and strategy, to name a few. About the role (key responsibilities)

  • Collaborate with data specialists from across the Data Team to design and enhance our systems to enable analytics, machine learning, and delivering insights at scale.
  • Monitor, maintain and support our current solutions as you evolve them, including being part of an on-call roster should an urgent issue come up.
  • Work with colleagues to maintain and operate the production data pipelines, with an emphasis on monitoring for changes in data quality.
  • From ideation to production enable the development of easy-to-use infrastructure, tooling and monitoring for data applications and reproducible data science workflows.
  • Be a go-to specialist in at least one relevant area, while staying current with emerging practices, techniques and frameworks
  • Mentor junior team members, increasing our collective ability to build and operate intelligent data-intensive products
  • Champion the ethical use of data in everything we do, ensuring our teams are always working with the best interests of customers in mind
  • Contribute to our standards, processes, and guidelines, shaping the way teams at Xero use data and build data products
  • Guide your team to successfully deliver outcomes aligned with the Data Team's and Xero's strategy
  • Help us find, attract, retain, and grow diverse talent in specialist data domains

About you:

  • You have 4+ years of productionising data-intensive applications (e.g. data pipelines, event-driven systems)
  • You enjoy collaboratively solving complex problems at scale
  • You love gaining new skills and learning from experts from different domains like ethics, statistics, and machine learning
  • You're comfortable working with experts from all across the business to deeply understand the most important problems that need solving
  • You've learned from experience the importance of knowing when you're building to learn vs building to last
  • You've mentored early career engineers, teaching the skills and mindsets needed to build, operate, and maintain production applications

What you’ll bring with you:

  • Desire and appetite for writing clear, reusable and easily maintainable code that solves customers' problems through software.
  • Thorough understanding of the practices and components required to support pipelines in production.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral and the ability to translate between business and technical audiences.
  • Extensive experience coding in production and knowledge of application architecture.
  • Expert level hands on practitioner skills in a good selection of the following areas and the appetite to learn those which are unfamiliar:data architecture, solutions architecture, CI/CD, distributed computing, streaming data and machine learning frameworks.
  • Good understanding and experience measuring and designing for non-functionals, like reliability, availability, security and performance.
  • Experience driving delivery at a senior level as part of a team building and supporting their solutions in an agile delivery environment.
  • A track record of proposing and implementing improvements to technical approaches, processes and practices in areas of expertise.
  • Experience with the current technology stack: Kubenetes, AWS, Kinesis, Firehose, Glue, S3, Lambda., Mixpanel, .Net
  • Experience with our technical direction: Kafka, Python, Snowflake, DBT, Datavault 2.0, microstrategy
