Head of Data, Cartography

About the Role
As our Head of Data, you'll be the single point of accountability for the Data team's deliverables in Cartography - Gojek’s mapping platform. You'll take the wheel in managing a talented troop of Data Scientists and Analysts, driving alignment between the Data team's priorities and business objectives with the Head of Business/Product and Head of Engineering. You'll also take a hands-on approach in leading the development and deployment of data science solutions to enhance our mapping products, working closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and Map Operation Specialists along the way. Your efforts will translate complex business and mapping problems into workable solutions to enable teams to build, deploy, and scale data science solutions on ETA prediction, location search, and map-matching to improve our customer and product experience.

What You Will Do

• Develop strategy and drive execution of the Data team's vision for our suite of mapping products, including routing, location selection, and map experiences
• Lead and manage a team of 7 Data Scientists and Analysts
• Translate complex business and mapping problems into workable solutions to enable teams to build, deploy, and scale Data Science solutions on ETA prediction, locations search, map-matching in Gojek to improve our customer and product experience
• Support the development of data science and analytical roadmaps to deliver continuous business impact with an emphasis on leveraging Statistical Models and Machine Learning to identify and fix data inconsistencies of our digital maps with the real world
• Participate in crafting OKRs in Cartography and ensure the timely delivery and quality of components owned by the Data team
• Provide coaching and mentorship to build skills and enable professional growth in each Data team member

What You Will Need

• At least 6 years of experience as a Data Scientist or Machine Learning Engineer, with experience in Python, Golang/Java, and Unix
• A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Operations Research, or a relevant quantitative field
• Solid knowledge of Data Science and Machine Learning fundamentals, with proven experience formulating Data Science solutions to business problems
• Proven ability to recognize business needs and to communicate with multiple stakeholders within the Product Management, Business and Operations teams
• Prior academic or industry work experience in the geospatial and mapping domain
• Prior experience in managing a Data Science team

About the Team
Our Cartography team, based in Singapore and Jakarta, is a platform team that surfaces mapping technologies needed by all internal product teams and business units within Gojek. In simpler terms, we make maps fit for our users' needs and provide geospatial insights across the company. At the heart of Gojek’s businesses, we move things around - whether that’s people, food, packages, or fresh groceries. This boils down to knowing the best routes, predicting traffic patterns, and knowing our region like the back of our hand. We continuously build data products for ETA prediction, mapping error detection, map-matching, location search and ranking, and reverse geocoding. One of our most successful implementations was the generation of new pickup points via unsupervised learning and NLP.  We've since deployed the pickup points generation and ETA prediction models in our main markets, and have our sights set on scaling these features to the wider region and beyond.  We’re a tight-knit, high-functioning team who genuinely love what we do, as we can see the results of our efforts play out in our users' everyday lives. When we aren’t working, you’d probably find us with our noses in books, or our eyes glued to the TV screen watching the latest Korean dramas.
