Udemy is looking for a senior data scientist to partner with senior leadership to guide and develop business strategy and platform policies based on a strong foundation of data-driven evidence. In particular, you will  contribute to the drive design and implementation of policies and products that optimize market mechanisms and drive long-term value of the platform. As a Marketplace Health data scientist, you will rely on quantitative methods, economic theory,  and business intuition and utilize a combination of modeling, experimentation, and causal inference methods to drive the critical marketplace health initiatives.

Here Are Some Questions You Could Be Working On:

  • How do we identify supply gaps in the marketplace?  How do we incentivize instructors to close such gaps?
  • How do we segment instructors into groups based on common characteristics and effectively deliver interventions to drive incremental value on the platform?
  • What is the optimal level of concentration/competition needed to maximize total market revenue?

Here Is What You Will Be Doing:

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to inform business direction
  • Be a subject matter expert and thought leader in marketplace health and help drive the data science roadmap
  • Provide technical leadership on experimentation and causal analysis (beyond standard A/B tests)
  • Develop end-to-end modeling solutions, build and maintain relevant data pipelines, and workflows
  • Define metrics and build dashboards to track the health of the marketplace
  • Proactively influence prioritization through data-driven insights
  • Effectively communicate and present to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Provide technical mentorship to others
  • Build Udemy’s technical brand through talks, blog posts, and publication

We Are Excited About You Because You Have:

  • 4+ years of relevant experience or 2+ years of relevant experience with a post-graduate education such as PhD in a quantitative field
  • Strong affinity for developing projects end-to-end from conceptualization to operationalization
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong business and product intuition as well as judgement
  • Strong data storytelling and data visualization ability
  • Strong SQL ability and proficiency with 1+ programming languages (Python strongly preferred)
  • Ability to work autonomously and has a strong interest to take ownership and lead while effectively partnering with stakeholders
  • Hands on experience in statistical/ML modeling, applied econometrics, causal inference and experimental design
  • Familiarity with data pipeline building (e.g. in Hive, Spark) and workflow tools (e.g. Airflow)

Nice To Haves:

  • Experience with business intelligence tools (e.g. Looker, Chartio, or Tableau)
