Udemy is looking for a (senior) manager to lead our Recommendations team. The team is focused on using machine learning approaches to serve the right learning content based on a user’s need. The team is also responsible for Udemy’s personalized recommendations system that is composed of batch (e.g., feature and machine learning pipelines), streaming (i.e., feature computation in real-time), and online (i.e., microservices to serve personalized recommendations) components. 
In this role, you will be responsible for leading a cross-functional agile team of data scientists, machine learning engineers, and software engineers to develop new ML products and engineering systems to provide better personalized recommendations. Success in this role will require a combination of people management skills, strong machine learning knowledge including hands-on experience with launching new data products, a good understanding of the data product development cycle, and experience with data or software engineering.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain an amazing team of high-caliber data scientists and engineers
  • Partner with product managers, data scientists, engineers, and other stakeholders (e.g., marketing, content) to build data products and drive execution
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and career mentorship for team members
  • Maintain high-quality standards, effective team processes, and best practices in both data science and engineering
  • Build Udemy’s technical brand through talks, blog posts, and publications

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience building data products (at scale) in cross-functional teams
  • 1+ years of experience managing and growing high performance cross-functional teams
  • Strong knowledge of machine learning lifecycle and hands-on experience on a variety of fundamental methods
  • Experience with the design, development, and operational maintenance of large-scale platforms and services
  • Proficiency with 1+ programming languages (e.g., Python)
  • Familiarity with agile practices (e.g., Scrum)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders
