The role
As an Engineering Manager you will be part of the team and vision to build a highly autonomous and empowered Data Engineering / Software Engineering group that will deliver some of our most challenging and visible projects.
We are a relaxed and easy going team, made of different nationalities. Everyone’s idea matters, regardless of the level of seniority. Being a people person is key for this role, you need to be able to understand the needs of your team at 360°, allowing you to interact with different personalities and different levels of seniority.
Working collaboratively as a team and with our business colleagues across our locations, you’ll be shaping the technical direction of a critically important part of Farfetch. Farfetch is a data driven company, massively grown in data over the last couple of years. We ultimately report into our CDO and we have hundreds of employees working just in the data organisation. The team in India is growing fast, with a combination of data and software engineers, and this is an unique opportunity to join and manage a group of skilled engineers to bring them to the next level of their journey, where you will be in charge of shaping the future of that.

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with other data teams, data scientists and product owners to deliver a roadmap of technical solutions and tools to our stakeholders, spread across the globe, in order to achieve their goals.
  • Develop effective ways to communicate, monitor, and manage your team through weekly one-on-one’s and team meetings.
  • You will work cross-functionally with various teams across regions, anticipating and more importantly removing blockers to create solutions that deal with large volumes of data.
  • Own the backlog of the team and make calls on the priorities;.
  • Be aligned and in sync with the other engineering managers on your team’s progress.
  • You will be a keen advocate of quality and continuous improvement.

Who you are

  • You are a people person and a team builder. This isn't your first role as manager. You know how to hire, train, and develop engineers with different levels of seniority.
  • Product vision: a customer-centric mindset and the capacity to ruthlessly prioritise the development of new features.
  • You are a skilled and effective communicator. Farfetch is distributed around the globe and written and verbal communication has to be top notch.
  • You have managed technical teams before: you’ve helped a team optimize execution, deliver technical projects, whilst establishing and communicating timelines to your customers.
  • You have good analytical and problem solving skills, the ability to work in a fast moving operational environment and you are enthusiastic with a positive attitude.
  • You have experience managing stakeholders. You’ve collaborated with stakeholders to understand and prioritise their needs. You advocate for your team and their needs by building strong relationships with engineering architecture, security and infrastructure teams.
  • You see around corners: balancing scrappy results with building high quality data and infrastructure. Something done is better than something perfect and you know how to balance speed and quality.
  • You have experience in a cloud environment: we don’t expect you to be hands on, however you speak the same language of the engineering team.
  • You have helped people develop their career plans: you understand how to help people find their strengths and give them opportunities to grow and develop them, setting OKRs and personal goals.
  • You have helped teams resolve prioritisation conflicts: you know what to do if the request “I need everything yesterday” comes.
  • You can translate unfamiliar data and engineering topics into approachable ones for stakeholders with less technical backgrounds.
  • You are a mentor: you understand that managing a team is about coaching and mentoring them, communication and other soft skills and you’re comfortable redirecting people gracefully when they could be on a better path.
We are committed to equality of opportunity for all employees. Applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.
