Principal Data Engineer - Data Platforms

The Data team is responsible for driving the adoption of data driven decision making across Xero - for both our internal users and our global audience of small business owners, bookkeepers and accountants. We create, manage and deliver a wide range of data services and products including core reporting, key data dimensions, extensible and scalable analytical data processing and storage facilities, machine learning frameworks and API driven prediction services.
We are the centre of expertise for data architecture, data modelling, machine learning, ethical data usage and artificial intelligence service design. We also lead the work to raise the data and AI literacy levels across Xero.

What you'll do

• Lead, consult, and deliver the Data Platform features and services as per a Roadmap you co-design and deliver
• Ensure that the architectures of our Data & Analytics platforms are fault tolerant and built to scale
• Set standards and best practices for ongoing enhancements based on Xero's data platforms architecture
• Research and champion new toolsets/methods to improve data ingestion, storage, and data access in the analytics platform
• Work at the intersection of infrastructure and software engineering, design and deploy cloud infrastructure built on top of components
• Provide leadership, guidance and technical mentoring to engineering teams, including code reviews to uplift capability and skills

What you'll bring

• Proven experience developing and maintaining Data Platform Services on Cloud Infrastructure  
• Experience in defining, designing and maintaining  large-scale enterprise Data Platforms and solutions
• Proven experience in operating at a senior technical level 
• Extensive experience in one or more programming languages
• Good understanding and experience measuring non-functionals, like reliability, availability, security and performance
• Proven experience facilitating discussions with technical and non-technical audiences
