Atlassian is continuing to hire with all interviewing and on-boarding done virtually due to COVID-19. All new and existing Atlassians will continue to work from home until it’s safe to return to our offices. Atlassian is looking for an Engineer to join our Data Engineering team and build elite data solutions and applications that power crucial business decisions throughout the organization. You are an empathetic, structured problem solver who is passionate about building systems at scale. You will enable a world-class engineering practice, drive the approach with which we use data, develop dashboards and data models to serve the needs of insights, and play an active role by making data available for enabling Atlassian to unleash the potential in teams. You love thinking about the ways the business can consume this data and then figuring out how to build it.
On a typical day, you will be working with different partners to review and gather the business reporting needs and architect/build data models, data extraction processes, and data applications that can help answer those needs. You have got proven experience working with large datasets and reporting platforms and data visualizations. Constantly striving to optimize the data models with the goal of providing data with quality and trust. As a specialist in the field of data, you will also partner with our technology teams, analytical teams, and data scientists across various initiatives
You'll own a problem end-to-end, so those skills will come in handy not just to collect, extract, and clean the data, but also to understand the systems that generated it, and automate your analyses and reporting. On an ongoing basis, it will be your responsibility for improving the data by adding new sources, coding business rules, and producing new metrics that support the business. The requirements will be vague. Iterations will be rapid. You will need to be forward-thinking and take smart risks.
More about You As a senior data engineer, you will have the opportunity to apply your strong technical experience in designing optimized data models and building efficient data pipelines and services that support a broad range of analytical requirements. Also, building reliable data models that help decision-makers make decisions around Atlassian’s Cloud Business. You will work with other teams to continually evolve solutions as business processes and requirements change. You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment and you are able to take vague requirements and transform them into solid solutions. You are motivated by solving exciting problems like data scale and trust & reliability of the metrics that help drive the business forward, where creativity is as crucial as your ability to write code!

On your first day, we'll expect you to have:

  • 8+ years of professional experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role
  • Able to design efficient reporting data models is a must
  • Excellent Expertise in SQL can independently mine data to translate Business data needs into creative visualizations
  • Experience building and designing efficient pipelines using Spark and/or Hive
  • Experience with pipeline orchestration tools like Airflow/Luigi
  • Experience working on Amazon Web Services (in particular using Kinesis, S3, SQS, and the like)
  • Experience in a technical environment with the following technologies: AWS data services (Redshift, Athena, EMR) or similar, Apache projects (Spark, Flink, Hive, Kafka)
  • You’re well versed in modern software development practices (Agile, TDD, CICD) and how they can apply to data engineering
  • A willingness to accept failure, learn, and try again!
  • An open mind to try solutions that may seem astonishing at first
  • A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience

We’d be super excited if you have:

  • Experience building platforms, microservices, and REST APIs
  • Good to have Docker and Kubernetes experience with respect to data pipelines
  • Experience in developing, publishing, and maintaining sophisticated reporting, analytics, and dashboards using Tableau
  • Experience building self-service tooling and platforms
  • Above all else, be engaged in the development process and incorporating business and technology strategy. Earn the trust of other developers in the team and then influencing them to build the ultimate analytical data model and pipelines.

The Data Analytics Engineering team is responsible for managing multiple analytical data pipelines all across Atlassian, including finance, growth, product analysis, customer support, sales, marketing, etc - so there are endless opportunities for growth. We maintain Atlassian's data lake and build a creative and reliable analytics data model that provides a unified way of analyzing our customers, our products, our operations, and the interactions among them.
