Job Description
The Senior Manager, Data Science will be responsible for the technological advancement in the field of performance marketing (strongly oriented on Google advertising auctions) to help us optimize our advertising spends to generate both strong short term conversions as well as long term (increasing the quality of our acquired audiences). He/She will be partnering with the Growth specialists & principals to refine the strategy and objectives. The candidate will be involved in all aspects of data product life cycle: research, develop and oversee implementation (including productionalization in AWS machine learning frameworks). He/She must show strong business acumen, strong technical skills and the ability & interest to oversee data projects from inception to final delivery & continuous monitoring while also having a hands-on approach.
Through the journey at SSENSE, the candidate will also be brought to contribute in other areas (e.g. recommendation, customer) and will see his/her scope increase to support our growth and data savviness.
- Be a subject matter expert in field of performance marketing
- Develop and execute the roadmaps (identify opportunities, understand model / systems opportunities, be aware of business model changes that would require to update the strategies)
- Build optimization strategies for different types of product groups (different objectives, constraints, etc)
- Have a hands on approach and be fully accountable for operations and performance (model drift, reliability of deployed services, etc)
- Build high quality decision support tools & decision making systems
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advise with and elevate a team of world class data scientists & machine learning engineering, providing leadership through consulting and coaching on a regular basis
- Manage & guide the team of data scientist and machine learning engineers into providing data driven solutions partnering with strategic business stakeholders while leading to the development of complete solutions including their deployment
- Identify and lead data science projects that drive material business value and align with the strategic positioning of the department and of SSENSE
- Develop partnership & guidance with the other departments (technical & business) to establish and deliver cross-functional projects
- Gather and analyze data, identify key prediction/classification problems, devise solutions and build prototypes
- Formulate machine learning approaches while paying attention to business metrics
- Design features from the rich data available from many sources, training, evaluating, and deploying models
- Develop high-performance algorithms to answer business needs
- Test, implement and deploy algorithms while understanding and resolving dependencies across systems
- Identify and solve for broad, highly complex problems based on a multitude of factors
- Design experiments to maximize insights while minimizing errors
- Enhance data collection procedures to include information that is relevant for building analytic systems
- Process, cleanse, and verify the integrity of data used for analysis
- Evangelize best practices for data synthesization, aggregation, and presentation
- Remain abreast of cutting edge developments in the Data Science domain to enhance current practices and upskill team members
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS
- Master’s or PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- A minimum of 5 years experience with Data Science, Predictive Analytics and Machine Learning with a focus on driving business impact
- A minimum of 2 years leading or managing data science teams
- Proven record of successful data driven product delivery (ideally in a serverless / cloud way, a strong asset)
- Strong understanding of advanced modeling techniques, such as machine learning & nonparametric approaches.
- Understanding of data products, from design up to their deployment (an asset)
- Experience in the specific field that the candidate will oversee (a strong asset)
- Excellent programming skills using SQL & Python
- Experience working with GitHub
- Experience in developing in AWS environments (Cloud9, SageMaker) (a strong asset)
- Experience in AWS serverless solutions (CloudFormation pipelines, lambas, step functions) (a strong asset)
- Experience solving analytical problems using quantitative approaches
- E-commerce experience and knowledge (an asset)
- Understanding of web analytics (an asset)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
