The Center for AI Safety is a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, dedicated to research and the advancement of the field of AI safety. We believe that artificial intelligence will be a powerful technology that will dramatically change society, and our aim is to mitigate potential high-consequence risks. We’re seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Writer who is passionate about advancing the field of AI safety. As an ML writer, you will have the opportunity to shape and execute our content strategy, leading the development of various projects, including ML safety newsletters, impactful videos, compelling op-eds, and thought-provoking articles. Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning is required. An ideal candidate has taken at least two deep learning higher-education courses and has experience writing for a non-Machine Learning audience. The right candidate will significantly contribute to our ability to reach our target audiences and advance AI safety.

As an ML writer, you will have the opportunity to shape and execute our content strategy, leading the development of various projects, including ML safety newsletters, impactful videos, compelling op-eds, and thought-provoking articles. Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning is required. An ideal candidate has taken at least two deep learning higher-education courses and has experience writing for a non-Machine Learning audience. The right candidate will significantly contribute to our ability to reach our target audiences and advance AI safety.
As part of this role, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of impactful projects, including:
- Writing and promoting our ML safety newsletter: You will be responsible for crafting high-quality content that informs and engages a technical audience on important topics related to AI safety. This will involve staying up-to-date with the latest research and trends in the field, and translating complex technical concepts into accessible and compelling language.
- Managing and writing an AI safety blog: You will own an AI safety blog meant to educate the non-ML community on the central concepts of AI safety. The goal is to be a trusted source of timely and relevant information and to build a shared understanding and language around AI safety.
- Developing the script for outreach videos: You will be tasked with creating video content that educates and inspires a broad audience on the importance of AI safety. This will require developing scripts and content, while collaborating with designers, animators, and other team members to develop visually engaging and informative videos that effectively communicate key ideas.
- Leading op-eds or other thought-provoking articles: You will have the opportunity to lead the creation of op-eds and other written content that explores important issues and challenges related to AI safety. This will involve conducting in-depth research, analyzing complex topics, and crafting persuasive arguments that resonate with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Establishing our Twitter presence: You will be responsible for developing and executing a social media strategy that helps us build and engage with our audience on Twitter. This will require staying up-to-date with the latest social media trends and best practices, and using data and analytics to measure the effectiveness of our social media efforts.
You Might Thrive in This Role if You Have:
- Excellent writing and content creation skills, including the ability to write clearly and persuasively for a variety of audiences
- A deep motivation to promote AI safety
- An understanding of machine learning concepts and techniques
- Experience developing content for various mediums, such as blogs, newsletters, videos, op-eds, and articles
- Familiarity with social media platforms and experience using them to build and engage a following
- The ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with designers, animators, and other team members.
- An analytical approach to evaluating and increasing the impact of your content
- Taken at least 2 deep learning classes and have work experience or comparable experience where content creation was a primary requirement of the job. (Comparable experience here meaning experience with content creation and building a following, even if it was outside a formal position.)
Overall, the ideal candidate should have a combination of technical expertise, strong communication and collaboration skills, and a deep passion for promoting AI safety.
