The Data Science department at The Telegraph works closely with a number of teams across our business to drive subscription growth and commercial return, building products to improve efficiencies across the Newsroom, whilst bringing best in class knowledge and techniques to the forefront. This Graduate role will give the successful candidate hands-on experience translating business problems into data solutions, applying machine learning techniques to build bespoke models, work closely with data engineers to fully operationalise delivery and spend time understanding how our Data Scientists work with our editorial, subscriptions and product teams.
The program is designed to expose the Graduate to the core parts of The Telegraph business and develop them both commercially and technically. After completing the programme the Graduate will have the knowledge and experience to specialise within Data Science.
Alongside on the job training from the team, graduates would also be given the opportunity to up-skill and undertake further training on languages such as SQL and Python along with machine learning techniques. This may involve external training where required.
What to expect from the programme
- In Data Science you will take a hands-on approach bringing best in class knowledge and techniques to the forefront to existing and new projects
- Work with different data sets and structures including web behaviour, article metadata, unique customer views, email response and revenue models
- Partner with Technology and stakeholders from around the organisation to drive revenue growth and operational efficiencies
- Collaborate with the wider Insight & Analytics functions to share both business knowledge and technical skills, growing personal and overall team capabilities

Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will champion data-led approaches to ongoing business challenges. This could involve optimising subscriber acquisition through targeted offer models, identifying current subscribers at risk of churn, or building tools to improve newsroom efficiency by recommending articles for social media.
- Gather business requirements and translate business problems into data solutions that will increase revenues or reduce operational costs
- Build models and products, ensuring the right balance of purity and pragmatism, to ensure they answer business needs and are fully adopted to deliver real-life value
- Work closely with data engineers and business area owners to deliver end to end solutions from initial proof of concept through to fully operational delivery
Requirements
- A passion for data science, AI and machine learning
- A numerate Degree or postgraduate qualification (potentially including Statistics or data science)
- A proactive interest in learning a programming language e.g. SQL, Python, R
- Some machine learning knowledge
- An interest in developments in analytics, AI and cloud computing
- Please note that this scheme is not open to established Data professionals

Assessment centres will be conducted in the last two weeks of June and you may be invited to complete pre-assessments beforehand. The successful candidates will join the team in September, 2023.
