The purpose of the Data Product team is twofold. Firstly, we aim to deliver performant, reliable and efficient data platforms for the collection, management and analysis of data. Secondly, we develop and advance machine learning algorithms that continually improve our products and services. By doing this we enable ourselves to make data-driven decisions and support data intensive applications. Our efforts form the link between science, research and insurance experiences.

What you'll do

As a Data Engineer, you will thrive in a team that works collaboratively to solve complex problems and has fun doing it. As our newest Data Engineer you will:

• Evaluate data needs and objectives across the business
• Analyse and organise raw data to build data systems and pipelines
• Prepare data for prescriptive and predictive modelling by building algorithms and
• prototypes
• Combine raw information from different sources, data acquisition
• Develop analytical tools and programs
• Develop and maintain data systems (data warehouse, data lake etc.) and pipelines
• Monitor data pipelines ensuring performance metrics remain within acceptable limits, and continuously improving their efficiency, quality and transparency
• Develop and contribute to data pipeline documentation and guidelines

Finally, you’ll also have the opportunity to learn the insurance industry and understand the key differentiators that makes Open a key player in our space and why we will be successful on our mission to deliver the best insurance experiences, at the best price, for the world.

What you'll Bring

• 3-5 years of experience in data
• Extensive experience using Python and SQL, familiarity with Snowflake is a bonus
• Good understanding of building ETL/ELT data pipelines and data warehousing/reporting techniques
• Hands on experience with SQL database design, data modelling and domain-driven design
• Exposure to a wide variety of data sources beyond SQL Databases, like accessing data through APIs, files, data streams etc.
• Solid understanding of software engineering practices, design patterns and architecture paradigms and the ability to impart this knowledge onto those in your team
• Strong analytical and problem solving abilities
• Great communication skills, especially in explaining complex data problems and solutions.
• Creativity and curiosity. Never stop learning new things and we love to be surprised with innovative solutions

Role Location

Our offices are located in Sydney, Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast. This role is flexible around all of these locations.
