About Our Summer 2023 Internship Program

Our interns provide valuable support and fresh perspectives to our teams as we work toward setting a new direction in the fight against cancer.

This is a 10-week program, designed to provide impactful work and foster an environment for learning and professional development through mentorship and networking opportunities. Throughout the program, our interns will be empowered to drive key projects with real business outcomes. This is a highly cross-functional and personalized program, offering guidance and support from our Hiring Managers and assigned mentors.

Our program is intended to begin mid-June and end mid-late August. The working hours for this role are 9am-5pm Pacific Time, with some flexibility determined by the Hiring Manager and leadership team. This position is open to remote within the US or onsite at our headquarters in South San Francisco.

About the Opportunity

Freenome is seeking a Machine Learning Research Engineer Intern for the summer of 2023. You will utilize your software and analytical skills to develop programs and applications collaboratively with your teammates as well as share ideas to contribute to innovative solutions. You will also utilize your communication and prioritization skills to develop a consistent track record of delivery. 

Our multiomics platform ingests clinical-grade, high-dimensional, biological data for early cancer detection. We’re a diverse group of Engineers building tools and services which enable our ML and Molecular Scientists to turn great research into even better products. Our goal is to create actionable insights for health systems and guide change for the way doctors think about early detection of cancer.

No biology or scientific experience is necessary for this internship. You will be trained on any relevant scientific skills needed for your work. If you are passionate about being part of a strong engineering team while combating cancer, we would love to speak with you!

What you’ll do:

  • Develop easily maintainable tools
  • Collaborate with team members for code and design review
  • Work with scientists, designers, product managers, and other engineers to solve complex problems in the face of lots of dynamism and uncertainty
  • Take a mindful, transparent, and humane approach to your work and your interactions with others

Must Haves:

  • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science or relevant computational discipline
    • Or alternatively, within 1 year post-graduation or post-certification
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interest in a collaborative team environment that values flexibility and transparency

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience creating production-grade software using Python
  • Publications in peer-reviewed computer/data science journals
  • Experience working with datasets too large to fit in RAM
  • Experience with parallelizing and distributing model training across clusters
  • Experience with writing applications to efficiently use GPUs (e.g., GPU-sharing)
  • Experience presenting on a computer/data science topic at conferences
  • Participation in computer/data science competitions/challenges
