Research Engineer - Droplet Programming

The company’s mission is to make biology accessible to everyone through desktop bioprinting. We are beginning this mission by making proteins accessible through the launch and on-going development of our eProtein desktop bioprinting platform. eProtein promises to be a breakthrough protein printing technology that brings rapid prototyping to the life science benchtop and accelerates the drug discovery process. We are looking for a junior droplet operations engineer to join the DMF interfaces group to develop scripts for droplet manipulation and enable bioapplication workflows on our eDropTM Technology. These scripts will contain dispense, split, mix and pathing routines that enable the development and optimisation of our eProtein workflow. This role involves working under the mentorship of senior members and updating the current workflow routines, and originating scripts for new workflows. The candidate with their broad general knowledge and experience in a modern programming language (preferably Python) will work on several internal projects for updating/developing scripts and macros for droplet operations and engage with a variety of internal stakeholders across different groups and departments.
This role will suit a creative, self-motivated individual who has the drive to work in a fast-paced startup, preferably biotech environment.
About the role:
- To assist senior members in projects and contribute to the group objectives
- Write and maintain scripts for droplet operations for a given application. This will form a large percentage of your day to day work.
- Understand, analyse and implement the workflow needs and feature modification requests into scripts for droplet operations
- Maintain the script revisions; monitor and correct for bugs and errors to account for droplet operation improvements and errors based on feedback
- Develop macros to automate and parametrise droplet operations, as needed
- Deliver on the technical allocated project deliverables or work packages ensuring objectives have been satisfied
- Accurately capture and record change logs and document script revisions
- Participate in technical discussions and problem solving exercises.
Requirements
Essential:
- A first-class or 2:1 degree in Engineering or Physics or a closely related area, with at least 1 year’s industrial experience
- Previous scripting experience in programming language such as Python (preferred), Java, MATLAB
- Ability to write understandable scripts and macros for script generation within the agreed timelines
- Ability to think clearly and possess problem solving skills
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with the relevant teams and departments
- Be able to work under the mentorship of senior members of the group to deliver against a variety of agreed milestones
Desirable:
- Experience in working with an interdisciplinary and cross-functional group
- Interest in automation
- Interest in microfluidics; lab on a chip technology
