WHY DATA SCIENCE & ANALYTICS?

The Data Science & Analytics organization's mission is to increase our speed, frequency and acumen of making decisions at scale by instilling a data-influenced approach to building products. We cover a wide area of the data spectrum including analytical data engineering, product analytics, experimentation, causal inference, statistical modeling and machine learning. Aligned and partnering with product groups, we use this vast tool belt to discover new opportunities and unmet use cases, influence and shape the product roadmap and prioritization, build data products and measure the impact on our community of players and developers.

WHY CORE ENGINE?

The Core Engine team is missioned to build world-class elastic game engine technology that powers engaging experiences. We build the primary technology that powers our 3D worlds including rendering, simulation, networking and systems. As a Data Scientist, you'll partner with engineers, data scientists, technical program managers, and leaders across the company in our efforts to improve the quality and performance of our game engine and the user generated content that runs on top of it. Your work will touch every part of the engine, from threading and memory management to physics and scripting. You will define KPI's and measure the impact of important features and improvements, while discovering areas of opportunity through dashboards, analysis and A/B experiments.

You Are:

  • Passionate about data. You use novel techniques and tools to extract value from data. You have a degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or other relevant field.
  • A strong communicator. You understand that analysis must be presented in meaningful ways and lead spirited discussions about the findings. You can explain technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • A capable statistician. You understand the value of characterizing data by its distribution. Covariance, Bias, and Conditional Probability are concepts that you rely on every day.
  • An expert transforming data with SQL and a scripting language such as Python or R. You're experienced in automating efforts and crunching massive volumes of data.

You Will:

  • Reporting to the Sr.Manager, you will define success metrics and manage new instrumentation and tools to make it happen.
  • Understand how networking, rendering, simulation and more help build a fast, scalable and engaging experience through the game engine across many devices.
  • Accelerate product development through your understanding of the underlying data and your ability to partner with product and technical leaders to provide insights that improve growth.
  • Access raw data, and then transform it, analyze it, and render it in a compelling way - all using a custom analytics tool kit built from state-of-the-art open-source libraries.
  • Build dashboards to understand root causes of changes in metrics.
  • Evaluate A/B experiments to determine success of product feature launches.
  • Influence how Roblox provides a better experience for the community of players and developers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of industry experience or 4+ years of relevant academic and industry experience
  • 1+ years partnering with engineering teams/systems or engineering background
  • 2+ years of experience using big data query/processing languages such as SQL, Hive or Spark to transform/manipulate very large datasets
  • 2+ years of experience in one or more scripting languages such as Python or R
  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Applied Math, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Operations or other technical field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Applied Math, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, Operations Research or other technical field
  • Experienced in data engineering, such as data ETL and telemetry logging.
  • 2+ years of industry experience in analytics focused on enhancing engineering platforms or operations
  • Prior experience leading an area independently as an individual contributor
  • Experienced in presenting analytics results and data storytelling to influence engineering teams and leaders
For roles that are based at our headquarters in San Mateo, CA: The starting base pay for this position is as shown below. The actual base pay is dependent upon a variety of job-related factors such as professional background, training, work experience, location, business needs and market demand. Therefore, in some circumstances, the actual salary could fall outside of this expected range. This pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.  All full-time employees are also eligible for equity compensation and for benefits.Annual Salary Range$253,430—$310,270 USD
