Tempus is seeking a highly qualified advanced-degree Summer Associate to work with us for the summer of 2023. We are looking for people who can change the world.

As a Summer Intern at Tempus, you will:

  • Apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to on-the-job experiences
  • Work on comprehensive, value-added project(s) that help enhance the fields of science and technology 
  • Collaborate with teams/colleagues in a fast-paced environment 
  • Gain professional development & build relationships with peers from across the country 

Anticipated Summer Project(s):

Leverage RWE multi-modal datasets (clinical and molecular) to streamline analyses and pipelines  for biomarker discovery, target validation and clinical trial design. 

  • Co-develop an R package that efficiently pulls real-world oncology patient cohorts with particular genomic, clinical, treatment, and protein phenotypes from the Tempus data lake, including a supporting R markdown HTML output.
  • Expand R package to additional data sources, which could include integration of TCGA data sources or beta testing new internal data models.
  • Improve upon existing R visualization packages for genomic (SNV, RNA, CNV, Fusions), clinical (biopsy timing/site), and treatment (drug response outcomes) data for the translational research team (which supports molecular oncology drug development projects), and write functions that incorporate existing coding standards.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing Master’s or Ph.D. (advanced degree graduation between winter of 2023 and summer of 2024) combining quantitative and/or computational skills (Computational Biology, Biostatistics/Statistical Genetics, Bioinformatics, Cancer Biology, or similar)
  • Experience and proficiency with R programming, some RShiny and RMarkdown experience. Nice to have R package development experience. Experience with complex data visualizations - R package such as ggplot2.
  • Knowledge and experience with statistical and analytical techniques. 
  • Experience with software development standard processes (e.g., using agile principles and tools - JIRA, with good modular and reusable coding practices, focusing on delivery and iterative refinement), version control systems (e.g., GIT), Unix. 
  • Highly organized and systematic, detail-oriented, and able to complete tasks with high accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a variety of settings and media.
  • Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Google Suite and Gmail, preferred.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with others in a fast-paced environment is critical. Be ready to fly the plane, as you’re still building it!

Additional Details:

  • You will spend 8 or 10 weeks working in our Chicago office.
    • The internship will be a hybrid, onsite 3 days/week with the option to work remotely the remaining days.
  • The program will run in two waves, commencing June/July and running through August/September (dependent upon your school calendar and availability).
  • A competitive hourly wage will be provided for the summer employment and a relocation bonus to help offset some of the relocation costs and resources to help you find housing.
