Position description

 

The School of Information at UC Berkeley welcomes applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track position at the Assistant Adjunct Professor level in the area of Data Engineering, Machine Learning and/or Natural Language Processing. This faculty member will teach in and be an integral part of the Master of Information and Data Science program and will conduct research in one of, or at the intersection of, data-driven engineering, machine learning, and natural language processing. Applicants must be up-to-date with and conversant in the latest methods and techniques.

 

This position is fully funded. The initial appointment is for two years, with the potential for renewal.

 

The position will include teaching in our online Master's program in Information and Data Science; service related to development, evaluation, and delivery of the Data Science program and courses; research collaboration; and participation in the intellectual community at the School of Information and on the Berkeley campus. The person offered a position on our faculty would have an opportunity to interact with a diverse set of colleagues, who value inclusion and welcome collaboration. Berkeley also offers opportunities to interact and collaborate with researchers in other departments and with scientists and engineers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. While research is an important aspect of this role, the focus of the responsibilities of this position is on teaching and service to the Data Science program.

Qualifications

 

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD or equivalent international degree, or enrolled in a PhD or equivalent international degree granting program at the time of application.

 

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

A PhD or international equivalent degree is required by the start date of the job.

 

Preferred qualifications

Preferred qualifications (by start date) include a PhD in a relevant science, technical, or interdisciplinary field such as Computer Science, Information, Information Science, Economics, Political Science, or Engineering with research experience in the field of data engineering, machine learning and/or natural language processing. Preferred qualifications also include a demonstrated record of relevant research , demonstrated teaching in online synchronous classroom environments, as well as online course development (formation of educational goals, design of curriculum and learning activities). A successful candidate will possess appropriate technical expertise and relevant research and be committed to working in a multidisciplinary setting. Relevant professional or industry experience in a data science or similar role is also desirable.
