THE OPPORTUNITY
We are looking for a talented individual with excellent analytical skills and property insurance experience to join the Betterview team as a Senior Data Scientist. This role will support the growth of Betterview’s product suite to continually provide new insights and data to insurance customers and improve property risk assessment. The Senior Data Scientist will lead data science and model development initiatives from ideation and experimentation through product integration and rollout, and will also play a key role in developing materials and analyses to demonstrate and quantify the value of Betterview’s data and product for insurance industry customers. As a senior member of the Data Science team, this role will serve as a mentor to more junior data scientists and provide technical guidance across the team’s technical book of work. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing startup developing cutting-edge analytics in the insurtech space.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Create models to derive meaningful insights from data to inform property risk management and decision-making.
  • Conduct robust validation studies to support regulatory reporting requirements for Betterview data and models.
  • Contribute to ideation, design and implementation of Betterview’s suite of analytical products.
  • Quantify value of Betterview data for insurance customers through rigorous analysis of past claims data.
  • Develop materials to help our customers understand Betterview’s data and models and incorporate them into insurance operations.
  • Identify and evaluate data sources for accuracy and potential to augment Betterview’s existing data catalog and/or improve existing models.
  • Identify issues with existing data, models and processes; propose and implement solutions to resolve issues.
  • Spearhead design and creation of new internal tools to facilitate data science team tasks.
  • Mentor junior members of the data science team.
  • Cultivate deep knowledge of Betterview’s data and leverage it to support continual improvement of our models.
  • Update tasks in Jira and keep good notes.


Requirements

WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO OUR COMPANY

  • Insurance:
    • 3+ years of insurance industry experience, e.g., at a primary insurer, reinsurer, broker, agent or insurance-adjacent analytics company.
    • Foundational knowledge of property insurance and risk assessment fundamentals.
    • Experience using historical claims data to develop predictive risk models.
  • Data Science:
    • 3+ years using Python for data analysis, visualization and modeling (NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, Scikit-learn).
    • Experience performing data extraction and manipulation using SQL.
    • Experience working on shared code bases and using git for version control.
    • Advanced degree in engineering, statistics, data science or related field.

The successful candidate:

  • Has the ability and willingness to travel up to 10%.
  • Has a proven track record of translating abstract goals into targeted technical problem statements, designing and running data science experiments to test hypotheses, and synthesizing findings for business stakeholders through written and verbal communication.
  • Has a strong technical and data science foundation - data analysis, feature engineering, modeling frameworks, model validation, and confidence intervals.
  • Has a working style and attitude consistent with the scientific method, e.g., running experiments to test a hypothesis; making decisions based on data and evidence.
  • Possesses an analytical mind and a strong nose for data issues.
  • Has experience developing model documentation and validation material to support regulatory rate filing for insurance data products (preferred).
  • Contains an understanding of geospatial data/modeling fundamentals (preferred).
  • Has knowledge of catastrophe modeling fundamentals (preferred).
  • Has computer vision experience, either in creating datasets for training or validating model performance (preferred).

that provide current market pay rates. The base salary range is considered a national average and is determined by the knowledge, skills, and abilities

required for this role and does not include our comprehensive benefits described below. When an offer is presented, compensation will be commensurate with

an individual’s background, experience, and location; therefore, the range associated with this position could vary. Offers of employment for this position will include base salary, equity, and a comprehensive benefits package.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

  • Compensation commensurate with experience.
  • Generous health benefits – medical, dental and vision.
    • Medical offerings include PPO, HMO, and HDHP options through Kaiser, Anthem Blue Cross, Sharp Health, and Sutter Health.
    • Betterview covers 75% of the sponsored medical plan employee premium, 60% of dependents.
    • For dental and vision, Betterview covers 75% of the employee premium, 50% of dependents.
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan.
    • Betterview matches 100% of employee contributions up to the first 3% of pay, then 50% of employee contributions on the next 2% of pay.
  • FSA and HSA.
  • 11 paid holidays.
  • Full-time employees receive 160 hours per year of paid time off; part-time employees accrue PTO on a pro-rated basis.
  • Paid parental leave. Betterview will provide up to 6 weeks paid parental leave to employees following the birth of an employee’s child or the placement of a child with an employee in connection with adoption or foster care.
  • Basic life and AD&D insurance. Betterview pays 100% of the premium. Employees receive a benefit amount of $50,000.
  • Shortterm disability. Betterview pays for 100% of the plan premium.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP. Betterview provides free access to a confidential EAP which offers licensed counselors as well as financial and legal experts to help with life’s challenges.
  • Pet Insurance. Betterview offers veterinary pet insurance at a discounted rate for employees.
