We are a team on a mission, to put accessible and affordable healthcare in the hands of every person on earth. Our mission is bold and ambitious, and it’s one that’s shared by our team who shares our values, to dream big, build fast and be brilliant.
To achieve this, we’ve brought together one of the largest teams of scientists, clinicians, mathematicians and engineers to focus on combining the ever-growing computing power of machines, with the best medical expertise of humans, to create a comprehensive, immediate and personalized health service and make it universally available.
At Babylon our people aren’t just part of a team, they’re part of something bigger. We’re a vibrant community of creative thinkers and doers, forging the way for a new generation of healthcare. We’re only as good as our people. So, finding the best people is everything to us.
We serve millions, but we choose our people one at a time…
The Role
We are looking for a data scientist, or a junior data scientist, who will collaborate with people from across the business to solve the highest value problems we have.Our group’s aim is to discover the insights hidden in our data and help us make smarter decisions. Your primary focus will be in translating business challenges into data challenges and applying data mining techniques, statistical analysis, and machine learning to solve them, and using the solutions to drive changes in the real world. Solutions range from a piercing insight into a product to deploying a machine learning solution that integrates with our systems.
You will work with stakeholders from Product, Commercial or Marketing teams as well as other data scientists and analysts. You will solve crucial challenges in healthcare - by driving key improvement in our products - and make sure the solutions are sustainable - by streamlining our business and driving efficiencies.We are open to candidates who wish to remain entirely technical in their career or who would like to pursue management opportunities though we do not anticipate these occurring within the timeframe of the post. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Design data science solutions, implement, deploy and maintain them (see current projects listed below for a sense of what we do)
  • Proactively identify areas where we can improve aspects of our products or business operations
  • Identify the optimal solutions, considering effectiveness against the costs to build, deploy and maintain
  • Communicate to technical and non-technical stakeholders how the approach will address the problems
  • Build, deploy and maintain Python based analytical or ML models into the Google Cloud Platform (R is fine for personal work that won’t be maintained by others)
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure that the results are received, understood and acted upon
  • Collaborate effectively with the Data Science team and other teams in the business
  • Participate in code reviews to drive high-quality code deployment
  • Present findings to the team and the business

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience working in a data focused role, with a proven track record of delivery on data science projects;
  • We would be open to software engineers with less data experience wishing to transfer to a data science role, if there is a sufficiently principled approach to business and data problems;
  • Experience in translating business problems into data/mathematical problems, solving them and using the solutions to drive change in the business;
  • Experience working with Data Engineering Teams and an understanding of how data flows in your organisation.

Skills

  • Experience implementing data solutions in Python (or similar experience with R), experience of writing production-level code is a bonus
  • Understanding of the challenges in deploying and maintaining models in a production environment
  • Excellent use of data visualisation to uncover problems and communicate results
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of machine learning and statistical methods
  • Experience with, and solid understanding of, some specific models (for example logistic regression, kNNs, SVMs, Gradient Boosting) for commercial applications;
  • Experience writing highly-efficient SQL code on big data platforms;
  • Educated to Bachelor or Masters in a quantitative subject, or with equivalent industry experience
  • Experience communicating data science techniques and outputs to those in different disciplines, including to non-technical stakeholders;
  • Ability to take initiative in a constantly-changing work environment and adopt a generalist do-what-it-takes mindset. You’re not afraid of getting your hands dirty and will pick the appropriate model for the job, not the coolest!
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a non-hierarchical manner across multiple teams

Nice to have

  • Experience working in a start-up environment
  • Experience working with big data frameworks, such as the Google Cloud Platform
  • Deep expertise in statistics or a specific area or application of machine learning

  • Experience with data visualisation tools, such as Tableau or Looker

  • Translating the value proposition of our products into testable hypotheses
  • Designing tests that would elicit evidence of product success or failure
  • Sourcing or justifying acquiring data where we cannot address these questions
  • Communicating the results to stakeholders
  • Building self-service tools for doctors to understand and tune our flagship AI product
  • Deep dives into our AI products
  • Automated tools to identify anomalous behaviour
  • Integrating detailed user research data into our models
  • Understanding how to improve our key AI underpinning our products, including a large probabilistic graphical model of medicine
  • Profitability forecasting for new deals
